Who knows, I think the most likely scenario would be a mass spiritual awakening of sorts. Hopefully.
Either way, the idea of 2012 came from the Mayan calendar, which was falsely interpreted to mean the end of the world as it ends then. Not true - they simply said that mankind will no longer need the calendar beyond that point for guidance. There's nothing about any world ending, cataclysm, disaster or whatever else.
Yea, I am under the impression that December 21st 2012 was simply the start of a new era, which could simply mean that a major scientific discovery will be made. If I had to guess the only specific possibility I see now is a supercomputer with the capability of improving it's own design. Of course I am still reserving judgment, even if this does happen in 2012 it doesn't mean the Mayans actually predicted it, for any major even taking place on or around December 21st 2012 will be considered by some to be a fulfillment of the prophecy.
Nostradamus is irrelevant in any real sense. Most of his predictions don't have dates attached and are so incredibly obscure that they are useless for predicting anything. His best "predictions" can be explained by him being an intelligent and well educated and may have been able to estimate the future a bit better then most people would have during that time period.
