The conflict was initiated by Georgia. They claimed they were reasserting control over South Ossetia. But they did not send troops in to occupy government buildings and other key facilities - they bombed the s**t out of the region, killing 2,000 civilians and Russian military monitors who were there as part of an agreement that guaranteed that the region would be semi-autonomous. I do not see how you cannot see the blood on the hands of the Georgian government. It gives Russia exactly the excuse they wanted to come in an re-assert themselves.

Quote:
THURSDAY 7 AUGUST

Georgian forces and separatists in South Ossetia agree to observe a ceasefire and hold Russian-mediated talks to end their long-simmering conflict.

Hours later, Georgian forces launch a surprise attack, sending a large force against the breakaway province and reaching the capital Tskhinvali.

Quote:
A group of US military trainers spent their final days before evacuation at the Sheraton in Tbilisi sitting around the pool. One trainer admitted that South Ossetians were blaming the Americans for providing the Georgians with their arsenal and planning for the attack on the breakaway province. "We certainly supplied them with weapons and I wouldn't be surprised if the guys back in DC knew what was going on," he said. But shouldn't the US be helping its ally in its hour of need. "I feel a bit bad about that, but hell we are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan we can't fight all the world's wars."

and s**t like pulling elections in Ukraine, meddling in the internal affairs of Estonia arguably (Red Army soldier memorials moving?), provoking people on their border by violating the airspace of Finland and the other nations bordering them (really pisses off Finland and Japan with that lol), etc.

Well, yes and no. The statement needs to be expanded, skafather84. I suggest you do yet more research and come back with a response that convinces me you've got to grips with the basics.

South Ossetia was an autonomous province of Georgia until Georgia stripped them of autonomy, which they resisted by force. Eventually an agreement was reached that included Russian peacekeepers in S. Ossetia (Georgia agreed to this). South Ossetia voted in a referendum overwhelmingly to secede from Georgia a couple of years ago. Now Georgia sent in troops to re-take S. Ossetia, stupidly believing either that Russia would not respond or that the US would go to the rescue. Georgia's claims to S. Ossetia are weaker than Serbia's claims to Kosovo (incidentally the descent into genocidal madness in Yugoslavia began with Serbia stripping her two autonomous provinces of their autonomy), and initially Russia could plausibly claim it was acting within her mandate under the peacekeeping accords Georgia herself had agreed to (invading Georgia proper is another matter, obviously). Presenting the power struggle between the US and Russia for domination over the Caucasus as 'evil Russians invade cute democratic neigbour,' as most of the Western media has done (hushing up the referendum and the peacekeeping accords) is pure propaganda, though Putin's motives are obviously imperialistic.

You know, we can provide English lessons, as well as geography and history, if you're interested...

Skafather, you talk about Russian army presence in Chechenya... Which is their own soil. And that is not taking a position on the Chechenya conflict, just stating a simple fact: until this point the area is still officially controlled by Russia, and recognised by the UN as Russian soil. So quite obvious Russia is involved in Chechen business, right? If they tackle local issues in a good way is a different question, but when a violent conflict exists on your soil you can hardly ignore it or look the other way. And obviously they will not just let Chechenya break away, no country likes to lose territory.

It is really ironical to hear an American say all these things. Your country is interfering in parts of the world where they have nothing to do with. Russia sorts out more or less regional issues. If they do this in the correct way again is different debate, but they can hardly be blamed for randomly invading countries. Your country however, and then I mean the politicians and not the people, needs a lesson in dignity instead of constantly forcing its ideologies on countries it has nothing to do with.

funny article from the commies' side.

"Georgian troops attempted to storm the city much as Hitler‘s Panzer divisions blazed through Europe."

Actually, Georgia did attack and kill Russian monitors that were there according to treaty. So the question is not 'why would they?' but 'why did they?'

The US and EU help Kosovo gain independence. That's considered "good"

Russia tries to help South Ossetia gain independence. That's considered "bad"

I smell a double standard!

They're not commies anymore, skafather84, although I appreciate such minor detail takes its time to trickle-down to the Yank proletariat. I don't really see the funny side either, especially after watching the anti-Russian crap broadcast on various Yank and British news channels recently.

The most bizarre thing of late was a statement from your great leader, Bush. He described Russia's actions as "disproportionate". Considering the tens of thousands killed in Iraq and Afghanistan on his behest, half-way round the world from the USA, Russians sorting out some business on their own doorstep is quite reasonable and proportionate. Moreover, if he wasn't so obviously trying to make the Black Sea into an American lake, none of this may have happened in the first place.

They're not commies, but Putin is very authoritarian (despite Medvedev being the actual president), and is wanting to restore Mother Russia to its past glory.

The Georgians got the asswooping they deserved for bombarding the ossetian capital with rockets.
This conflict really could not have turned out any other way in my opinion.
How can you stop artillery pounding Ossetia from Georgia, without entering Georgia ?
I think it's Russia's duty to protect it's citizens abroad from being mass murdered.
The media obviously chose a side long before the this conflict started.

Well, it's not over yet.

I was listening to the news earlier and they'd reported that the US had placed Georgian airports under their protection. For a minute, a chill ran down my spine at the thought of the possible consequences. Fortunately, it was just that idiot Saakashvili playing games with rhetoric. The man's trying to start WW3.

Another cold war seems highly unlikely to me.
America has thus far not threatened with any kind of militairy action.
How can they possibly take on Russia as they already have huge numbers of theyr active militairy personel occupying Iraq and Afghanistan.
It seems they are busy disarming Georgia at the moment.
Wich is kind of funny seeing as that's billions worth of weaponry they received from America.
So in a sence the American taxpayer also got robbed lol.

All true, but Saakashvili's democratic credentials aren't impeccable by any means. To complain of Russian authoritarianism while simultaneously supporting authoritarian regimes in Central Asia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, etc (often actively arming them) is US hypocrisy. Not being American, I don't automatically see a reason to support US domination of the Caucasus over Russian domination.
