I have to start paying for it once classes start next week, and I only paid enough to eat 14 meals a week. Plus, the dining hall serves a couple thousand students in a small space, so that could be a problem for me in terms of sensory issues.

EDIT: Sorry for derailing the thread, but I find the price of ramen noodles more interesting than what Wal-Mart chooses to pay their employees.

Coke? You are a man of luxury I see, whenever I buy soda, I usually get some off-brand, like Dr. Skipper, or Dr. Thunder. The best way to get stores to adopt better business practices is to not shop at places that, in your opinion, do not have good business practices. Even though I'm definitely not a believer in Neoliberal Economics, some principles of it definitely work....

Voting with your wallet works, but only up to a point. There will always be enough people buying from Snears and Wal-Fart to keep them in business, but not enough to affect their workers' wages.

I wonder what the minimumwage for say a 30 year adult would be in the US.
So i can get a picture of how that wage is in comparison to others.
Here in the Netherlands for an adult it's 8 Euro wich i think is like 11,5 dollars ?

I don't think they pay according to age where I live, more like according to rank and whether you're on second or third shift.

Suffice it to say that the American minimum wage is far lower than the Netherlands one. But very few people ever get paid minimum wage, even working at Wal-Mart.

True, the minimum wage is a floor. But raising it has an effect on the bottom 40% or so of workers ... the closer one is to the minimum wage, the greater the boost when it is raised.

In America, hourly workers are entitled to a minimum wage of not less than $6.55 per hour ($13,624.00 per year) effective July 24, 2008, and $7.25 per hour ($15,080.00 per year) effective July 24, 2009. Overtime pay at a rate not less than one and one-half times the regular rate of pay is required after 40 hours of work in a workweek.

That is, until the government takes away twenty to thirty percent in taxes... :(

Does it? Let's say that I have a part-time job at which I earn $8.00/hour. Then imagine the minimum wage is raised to $7.50/hour. Would my wage change? No, because it is already above the minimum wage and the change in law has no impact on either me or my employer. Unless you are proposing that we raise the minimum wage to the current wage at the 40th percentile, which doesn't really seem all that feasible.

10 cent ramen? Near my home in Ohio, the price of ramen is up to 17 cents a packet. Tough times indeed. As for me, I just stick with drinking water. Ah, cool. I used to live down the street from UCF...and right across the street from a Wal-Mart. Great place...I wish there was one near me out here...the closest Wal-Mart is about 20 miles away. I have to go to Target instead.
