I wouldn't want women to be making the choice merely because of some inconvenience. If a woman could responsibly make the choice, such as the rape/incest/medical issues, or even for an issue like she wouldn't be able to properly support a child, then by all means she should be allowed. However, so many women would make the choice to abort merely because they think it an inconvenience.
I was reading a lot about abortion again for another thread and I discovered that apparently many women who have abortions
tend to already suffer from some degree of pysychological difficulties/mental ill-health etc, whereas better-adapted women ( those with strong sense of self, higher self-esteem, etc etc, aswell as those who believe that they will have enough support, which is another bit of positive thinking), who become unintentionally pregnant
tend to choose to have the baby.
In other words it is exactly the most disturbed, the most afraid, the least able in our society, the most alienated, who choose abortion. It is the decision of someone who is frightened, and sees no other way out. Very often they do not even feel that they have a choice; "I simply
can't have this baby". Black and white thinking, impossibility thinking, "outsider" thinking too, when it is clear that if a woman believes that she is likely to receive support from family or a partner she is less likely to choose an abortion.
I think it qualifies as a kind of "Self-Defence", " It's the baby or me" sort of attitude. That is how impossible having the baby seems to many women who have an abortion. Including me, 25 years ago.
I am pro-choice, because I think that so long as women find themselves in that position, ( because of several factors ), it would be cruel to outlaw it.
Factors include the coital-imperative, ( hetero-sex is almost always supposed/expected to include penile-vaginal penetration ), the nightmare that parenthood, ( especially single parenthood ), often is in our society, the fact that responsibility for the child is still mainly the mother's, and the fact that some women are prone, because of various mental factors, to sexual exploitation/naiveté aswell as incompetence/ignorance around contraception, etc.
