Popups heavily detract from the user friendly atmosphere of the site and they are something that I used to find their absence here a welcome relief.

Okay, then exactly what is tribalfusion trying to open on my computer and is it collecting any information? I just assumed it was a popup because I was getting a warning dialogue box saying that something was trying to open itself on this site. I never actually saw what was trying to open because my security settings are so high.

COMPLAINT:

I was just trying to respond to a post and when the post a rely page came up there was an ad right in the middle of the big white area where the text body belomgs.

That's what i mean about gimmicks. Usually i have to click the text body section to begin my response if i had done so in this case i would have been re-routed to their commercial.

here's how to make money; give the advertisers written instructions about your rules and require a signed copy from them.

when they violate your rules governing their ads sue the greedy jerks. the only cost is lawyer fees.

oh yes, right now i'm looking at a wal-mart ad. apparently i have been selected to receive a FREE $250.00 gift card. I loathe wal-mart firstly, and all that they stand for. And secondly free is never free. i would be promoting slave labor, the people who make all the crap that wal-mart sells, as well as their in store pe-ons.

A toast to wal-mart, the great american store.

My #1 pet peeve as far as online ads is the ones that say, "You got free such and such, just click here." I know there's no way anyone is giving away an IPOD or $250 so that's just plain misleading and borders on fraud. If an ad advertises a gimmick, it needs to be a bona fide deal.

Any ad that isn't text-only is annoying. And the Circuit City ad made me spill water on myself, we should sue.

There are definitely popups, Firefox has blocked a few.

I run a website & fairly large forum. We experimented with various advertising networks. "Click the monkey and get a free (trendy electronics item)!" and other such BS ads made practically no money, while annoying our users and making the site look like unprofessional crap.

We ended up running prominent AdSense ads at the top & bottom of every page. They are reasonably unobtrusive, well targeted, and every day they make double our monthly hosting costs.

I'd also look into any hacks for this forum software to make it more search engine bot-friendly, or else switch to a forum that is natively designed to better accomodate spiders (such as vBulletin). We get a lot of traffic from individual threads that have been indexed in Google.

Firefox has never had to block a pop-up here.

I hate to complain about the ads because I know we need em, but is it possible to avoid any that flash/blink/move? The only bothersome one I've actually seen so far is the "earn diploma" one (4 colored blocks with Canada flags) - don't like the way it shimmers.

Yes, I plan on discussing this over the phone with my advertising agent on monday. Although I can individual ads right now.

I didn't know that you lived in Canada. But rest assured that we will not be displaying any of the blinking flashy stuff once I talk to the agent.

Thanks, I didn't know if you even had any control over that. From what I've read in this thread and others it sounds like that blinky stuff bothers other aspies even more than me.

Don't worry. I have control over all aspects of this site and I am definitely listening to (and usually agreeing with) member suggestions.
