So, the contact form says "This will be read by site administrators and responded to within 1 day.", but that isn't so.

I think it's BS that I have to be deceitful if I want to stay a part of this message board. That's because there's no one who I can actually successfully contact (I tried PMing Alex as well) who is willing and able to either change my name or allow me to switch to a different account and be honest about it.

And it's really stupid to, in effect, encourage deceit. The policies and practices here encourage the very thing they are supposed to be against. If I can't have this account closed, and I can't have the name changed on it, my only remaining choice of changing my username is to start a new account, and not be open about it, thus having two accounts. A rule that, because of how it is enforced, encourages someone to break it is pretty silly, in my opinion.

I've no plan to do that. Not because I think it would be wrong, but because I've no interest in participating here if that's what's required.


And, while I'm replying, to the person who was surprised that I got to age 39 (38 actually, 39 is my current age) without knowing that MR can me mentally ret*d, there's no reason I should have. Before here I wasn't on any message board or such where mental retardation is mentioned. And, oh yeah, for most of those 38 years there was no world wide web, and I didn't have email, so there really wasn't anywhere where such an abbreviation would be used, even if the topic did come up somewhere.

Oh, and no, to whoever suggested it, changing my name to Mr would not be acceptable. I'm female. The name doesn't mean Mister either. While that misunderstanding of the name doesn't bother me, still, since it's not what the name means, Mr doesn't fit.

IIRC there was a user who joined under the name of nomnomwentthehamster (or something like that), which name appeared some time later to have been shortened to nomnom_hamster. This suggests to me that there is a facility for granting MR's request. Anyone else remember this?

No. I know two other members here have gotten their names changed as well.

The functionality exists to change a user's name in PHPBB. It's just a question of WP's policy on name changes. Some forums allow users to do it themselves (like on the Chronicle of Higher Education, I could temporarily become ZombieLazerJesus in honor of Easter).

When a forum is set up, the person setting it up decides what can and can't be done, and who has what powers. In this case the forum is set up not to allow it, although the owner may still have the power to do it. But if that owner is busy, it may not be a priority.

That makes 2 members who knew what the green meant ...

Still testing out if it fits and all. I may never go "active;" we shall see.
