Since when were mods owners?

Indeed, we are just members ourselves, trusted to have a few extra buttons. Despite the rule as quoted above my own feeling is that we (moderators) should try to always be as transparent as possible in our actions and not appear to act randomly or without good cause. Issues like popularity threads are something for which the mods should not just act in an arbitrary way. Speaking of which I have a practical suggestion:

In view of the controversy over so called "popularity threads" how would the members feel about having a single such thread as a sticky in the members section? The title could be based on one of the existing threads, maybe "What members have really stood out for you?", rather then "who do you like" etc.

If such a sticky thread was established no more "popularity threads" would be allowed in the Random Discussion or Members Discussion forums. Any new threads inadvertently created by members would be removed and their posts moved to the sticky thread in members.

How do the members feel about this as a possible practical solution? Would this be a reasonable compromise that would keep the majority of members happy?

If it's any consideration, such popularity threads do have a tendency of becoming flame wars as disputes will arise over a controversial mention.

As a occasional troll, I can already see several methods that can agitate a flame war while still respecting the rules. All someone would have to do is say they admire a user that's deeply disliked or hated by the most vocal people on here. Think worse case as a heated Xbox v.s PS3 thread on a gaming forum, but with people personally involved instead of consoles.

Popularity contests tend to get nasty when someone decides to admire a unpopular underdog or simply disagree with someone's choice, even if so kind about it.

Sounds reasonable to me. People could still participate if they like, and those who don't want to see it could avoid it. I'm for any solution that allows those who want to participate to continue to do so while allowing people who are offended or annoyed by it to easily get away from it.

over and over I hear people say they are hurt by the "I like so and so" threads. It's not much different from the day a friend of my daughter's handed out party invitations to 5 friends but not her, right while she was standing with the group. Pretty much everyone knows that hurts and should not be done.

In my opinion, those fighting to keep doing this have reached some level of social success for the first time and don't care if it's at the expense of others. They really ought to take that under consideration, given that it's likely been done at their expense at some point.

here's a proposal:
if you admire people, tell them via PM. they'll be very happy to hear it and maybe you'll make a friend.

Good suggestion. I have had ppl do that and I actually appreciate it more, because someone actually took the time to PM me :)

As I noted earlier in this thread, current mods are more constricted on this issue because Alex has since (between when you and I moderated together and last winter) posted to the moderators directly on the topic. I am confident the current team is doing the best they can within the frame works they have been given. Yes, a lot has changed.

Finding Emo topic

I have never understood the emotionalism inherent in many of the posts here, except for The Haven, where people who are hurting need to talk.

PPR is not to be taken seriously at all. Hot air rises.

It still fails to address the whole, jealousy or controversy problem. With material assets or celebrities, you're not as personally invested when it comes to popularity contests, so those are fine. But like I said, it's all an illusion to honestly trust what said in such threads to begin with, and if you cannot feel confidence about yourself without relying on others, you'll never be truly confident at all.

So you're saying that because I've been named in such threads I must rely on outside affirmation to be confident in myself?

Interesting perspective you've got there.

Well, do you feel you need such external affirming by others in order to be confident? If not, then you are confident without dependency on how others judge you, and that's a good thing. That's what I'm getting that, the lack of dependency on others to feel self-confidence in your daily decisions in your life is a valuable asset once mastered. It's something I've been trying to achieve for months now.

I don't require WP approval, if that's what you're getting at.

Pretty much, and the fact you feel comfortable at speaking your mind without fear of judgement, or the need for the approval of others in general.
