There are 2 types of pill. The combined pill and the eostrogen only pill. The first type is the one you take for 3 weeks and then have a week off where you get your period. The second you take every day and you have no periods whatsoever. I have taken the second one for years without any side effects. The second type is the same as the implant, which you can have if you're not good at taking pill every day. I didn't have that because anything even slightly invasive freaks me out completely.

Estrogen, vlech. I want more estrogen like I want explosive diarrhea...

I had horrible, heavy, debilitatingly painful periods since I started menstruating, and was put on pill after pill since my teens. I've tried just about every combination out there, and all of them had horrible side effects. I even tried an Implanon implant (don't go there! you've been warned!). Everything had horrible emotional symptoms, particularly depression, and some caused water retention and weight gain. :(

I did find something earlier this year that seems to be working really well, though. It's called NuvaRing. :D It's a little plastic ring that sits inside your body, where a tampon would. I actually got to try it for free while overseas. When I went for my checkup with my regular doctor at home, we had a long conversation about it. Apparently, they're finding that birth control that relies on vaginal absorption is far more effective with far less side effects, because the hormones are going exactly where they need to go instead of through your digestive tract and into your bloodstream.

I have had no emotional problems, have really light periods that average 3 days, and I've actually managed to lose 25 pounds this summer while gaining muscle. (The weight loss wasn't due to the NuvaRing, it was due to diet and exercise, but I just wanted to note that I managed to get fit *despite* the hormones.)

And for the first time in about 4 years, I'm back into a findable bra size! No water retention making them balloon to incredibly painful F's! That was the most ridiculous part really, as i'm only 5'1 and a size 4. 8O

But seriously, it's an option worth looking into!

Not even Aleve, Advil, OTC meds for cramps helped?
