thats the healthy attitude.

No I never ask people this question. I already have trouble with self-esteem the last thing I'd want is someone telling me an honest answer. I never really understood the purpose of this question some girls incessantly ask.

No, asking a question like this is like poking a sleeping dragon in the eye.

No, mainly because that would make it sound like I'm fishing for compliments and they will probably lie to me just to please me. Therefore, I just let people say I am pretty by themselves without anything from me.

I did ask my mother once. She gave an affirmative response, as a mother would, but I wasn't especially convinced. After that, I just came to expect lies, and therefore never saw the point in asking anybody else...

This is true. Generally people will only ask you this if they are a) indeed fishing for compliments or b) incredibly neurotic!

Its ok to ask, say, "Does this dress suit me?" or "is this shade of lipstick too dark?" that's just normal girl talk. I would only ask my mother or my close friends because they will be honest.

I asked my husband, once. He seemed confused, and told me he fell in love with me for the sound of my voice (? 8O !), my intelligence ( 8O 8O 8O ) and the way I am. That's more than good enough for me.

It's bizarre, but my only real friend (male, almost definitely AS and living on the other side of the world) is the only person ever to tell me I'm beautiful. In one of our brief face to face encounters he said 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and as long as I'm the one doing the beholding you will always be beautiful'. I'd rather have that one genuine compliment to treasure than a cartload of false flattery.
