Should wasps have a right to live?

I get on quite well with wasps, generally. I've gone out of my way to rescue a couple from a certain death.

I used walk through clouds of them in work, when I had to use the compactor at the Kellogg's factory.

Most people wouldn't go near it as the wasps were all over it, because the thing was covered in gallons of sweet syrup, but I walked through them and used the machine without getting stung. They were all around me but they didn't care about me being there.

I like wasps.

We have these beauties.The stinger can be up to 1/4 inch long and one of the most painful stings in the wasp kingdom.Ive heard it's so bad you almost pass out from the pain.Ive seen them in the yard, give them a wide berth.Luckily they are not aggressive.

I have to go up on top of a grain elevator about 200 feet in the air fairly regularly.

One day I got up on top and found wasps swarming everywhere I looked. As near as I could tell, there was at least one per cubic foot. The problem was that what I went up there to do had to be done -- I couldn't wait a week or two to do it. So I did the work I needed to do then.

Every time I moved, I would bump into them. While I was working on the equipment, some would land on my arms, legs, backs, head, face, ..., and crawling around before taking off again. I kept thinking about an old wive's tale about them not liking sweat so I was trying not to sweat but between the heat and the wasps, that was hard to do.

Once I got finished, I was sure happy to go back down. Sometimes when I'm up there, if I don't have anything pressing, I'll just sit back and watch the view and maybe even take a nap. But that time, I had something pressing -- getting away from the wasps.

Surprisingly, not one of them stung me. The only thing I could think of was that since they didn't have a nest up there, they didn't feel a need to defend it.

Wasps don't hate us or get joy out of stinging, they only sting when they feel threatened. If they think they or their nest is in danger, they attack, but otherwise they'll probably leave you alone if you leave them alone. Yes, they are more aggressive than bees, because they can sting as many times as they want with no harm to them (unlike bees, which die upon stinging because the stinger and attached organs pull out of their body when they do so), but do they sting just for grins? I really don't think so. They turn up at picnics because they smell the food - particularly anything sweet will attract them (I remember one time when my brother was eating an apple outside, a wasp started following him because of the apple). They don't come around to deliberately harass us unless we're too close to a nest. They are also important members of ecosystems both as part of the food chain and as pollinators. I really don't think wasps have any less of a right or a reason to live than any other creature. We get the occasional wasp in our house during the warmer months, I just use a cup with a lid to catch them and let them go outside instead of reaching for the flyswatter (I do the same with flies, too).

One thing to discourage wasps is to clean outdoor areas of trash e.g., emptying garbage-cans - as wasps love all of sugary residues of soft-drinks, and sweetened foods.

Upon an online search on discouraging wasps, spray areas with (organic) sprays e.g., mint was suggested as wasps dislike certain odors. In the case of mint, humans would actually enjoy.

I know a guy who feeds them at the start of autumn, gives them a little party before they die. He sits in his porch with wasps flying all around him going crazy on sugar water.

Wasps are vital to the ecology. Some are predators that prey on harmful bugs. Here is a nasty big spider in Brazil that is prey for egg laying wasps.

Wasps eat aphids and greenfly etc, so gardeners appreciate them. The issue is when they make their little homes too close to where we live. They make such cozy and beautiful little homes. They are soo clever. They don't normally sting until later on in the season when their queen dies as when she dies, they have no sugar and go on a frantic chase to find sugary things. They get grumpy and angry because they know their time is short. That is the time when they are most likely to sting.
Wasps are also very protective if each other and like bees, if you get in the way of their flight path they will protect it. If someone kills a wasp by squashing it, the other wasps will sense this (Smell?) and all try to come out to fight off whatever it was that was attacking it, as they love their queen wasp and are protecting her. They also love each other.

We can learn a lot from wasps. Is a shame they get so stingy as they are fascinating creatures.
