Well yesterday I ran across an article that discussed that very subject:

* A new Foreign Policy report cites sources detailing how the communication system between the CIA's spies and handlers in China nearly a decade ago was compromised.
* The vulnerability contributed to the deaths of at least 30 spies, the sources said.
* This internet-based system, imported from operations in the Middle East, was apparently brought to China under the assumption that it could not be breached.
* But, according to the report, the program actually had telltale links to the CIA that would have allowed China to work out what was going on.

A firewall used by the CIA to communicate with its spies in China compromised their identities and contributed to their executions by the Chinese government, several current and former intelligence officials told Foreign Policy magazine in a report published Wednesday.

In a two-year period starting in 2010, Chinese officials began accurately identifying spies working for the US. Chinese authorities rounded up the suspects and executed or imprisoned them before their handlers were able to determine what was going on.

The same thing happened in Russia in the 1980s to the agents Aldrich Ames sold out to the KGB.

The leaked CCP Database was originally in Mandarin. This list has been translated into English and is available on an extremely large excel spreadsheet.

The leaked lists details details of 1.95 million communist party members, mostly from Shanghai. The Chinese Communist Party has more than 91 million members. So this lists represents a small portion.

I think what is most disturbing is the fact that these individuals on this list have been organized into a number of cells, called party branches that have been embedded in a multitude of companies, embassies, governments and universities. The database provides a listing of 79,000 communist party [cells] branches.

Regular party activities are seen as an ideological line of defense against "bad ideas" like democracy, human rights, judicial independence, and the separation of powers, which Xi's leadership has ruled out as foreign imports aimed at overturning CCP rule. lian Duncan Smith likened CCP membership to "joining a crime family in the New York Mafia." "The CCP demands secrecy, cunning and utterly ruthless discipline from its millions of members. Notoriously secretive, its authority is absolute," he wrote.

Boeing has 17 branches, totaling 252 CCP members. Sixteen members are part of Boeing’s Hongqiao Maintenance Base Boeing Line Maintenance Division . . . First Workshop Party Branch; 22 are in the Second Workshop Party Branch; 13 are in the Third Workshop Party Branch, 14 in the Fourth Workshop Party Branch. There are four subdivisions of the Pudong Maintenance Base Boeing Line Maintenance Branch, totaling 49 members. Two branches of the Pudong Maintenance Base Boeing Line Maintenance Branch Cargo Aircraft Line Maintenance total 33 members. Also listed are 27 members of the Party Branch of Boeing Fourth Branch of the Flight Department of Eastern Airlines Yunnan Co. and 23 members of the China Eastern Airlines Beijing Maintenance Department Party Committee Boeing Maintenance Workshop Party Branch.

According to the database, 96 members in the Qualcomm Wireless Communication Technology (China) Co. Ltd. Party Branch, and 133 additional members spread over six party branches of Qualcomm Enterprise Management (Shanghai) work for semiconductor manufacturer and 5G wireless technology company Qualcomm, a US-based multinational. Qualcomm was awarded a contract by the Defense Department in 2018 to develop multifactor authentication security systems for US military computers.

Hewlett-Packard has 390 CCP members in 14 branches across its China operations

ANZ Bank had 23 members listed in one branch in its Chinese operations.

Two banks, HSBC and Standard Chartered, had 600 party loyalists across 19 branches in 2016.

While Pfizer includes 69 members of the communist party workers in its Chinese subsidiary, AstraZeneca has 54 members.

Germany’s Volkswagen, which has 5,700 CCP members working for its 131 branches.

New York University also appears with 71 members attached to a branch named East China Normal University Shanghai New York University Faculty and Labor Party Branch.

You would have to a pretty big dummy not to. [sigh]

I really think that people have to mangle themselves to such a degree to make it that they have no cognitive space for this sort of thing, so they'll do whatever they have to in order to make it vanish if it's not their cup of tea, if they don't feel like acknowledging it would help them win at life (or worse - it would take up what few resources they have and they'd start losing).

Ultimately the goal of having functional institutions is that, indeed, 'someone else' can worry about these sorts of problems. The trouble is, if those institutions start flagging, you start needing redundancy of everything. If the police are failing then anyone with common sense needs to figure out where to get guns, how to get good with them, how to fight at the most expert level they can, etc.. If the economists turn out to be crooks then anyone who doesn't want to be taken has to find the time or resources to gain an amateur-level understanding of MMP. If people are using knowledge of law to mug each other then you need to know things about the law that you wouldn't have otherwise wanted to. If you can't trust your banker or investment advisor to abscond with your funds because things have gotten that loose then you have to learn all the different ways they can screw you and constantly show vigilance to not be a mark or a sucker. If bureaucracies are leaking like a civ to foreign governments then you have to go down the rabbit hole of figuring out whose lying about what and what their vested interests are. The point being though - if we're not running a tight ship at the top or things are in collapse it'll happen from countless angles and by the time you get to fractal small-scale collapse events no one wants to keep track of it, it would be a full-time job and one where you'd need to not have to worry about getting robbed for your possessions or stolen from by bankers, investment advisors, or lawyers.

Come to think of it, I have always wondered about that old man and his family running the local the Panda King restaurant ... I also have to wonder if Mark Anthony Aguirre knows about them.

Well right, either all Chinese people are CCP spies or we're in neo-McCarthyism. More complexity than that doesn't naturally occur in the world.

I'm also still waiting for all of the people who wanted to shut down flights from China earlier this year to admit that they're racist xenophobes. Won't hold my breath.

Document Number Nine

Document Number Nine (or Document No. 9), more properly the Communiqué on the Current State of the Ideological Sphere (also translated as the Briefing on the Current Situation in the Ideological Realm), is a confidential internal document widely circulated within the Communist Party of China in 2013 by the General Office of the Communist Party of China. The document warns of seven dangerous Western values, allegedly including media freedom and judicial independence. Teaching on any of the seven topics is forbidden.

The document is critical of "extremely malicious" ideals spreading in the Chinese society, such as ideas of (Western) constitutional democracy, civil society, universal values (freedom, democracy, and human rights), neo-liberalism, and freedom of the press (described as the "Western news values"). The document warns that such subjects undermine the Chinese Communist Party's control over Chinese society. The document also promotes ways of dealing with these problems, which include "Unwavering adherence to the principle of the Party's control of media."

In April 2015, the Wall Street Journal's Josh Chin reported a 71-year-old Chinese journalist was convicted for releasing Document 9. Journalist Gao Yu was sentenced to seven years in prison by Beijing's Third Intermediate People's Court after being found guilty in a closed trial of leaking state secrets to foreign media.
