Wow. I think I've made Skafather's point way too many times. "They do worse so it's okay that I do poorly." I make that argument constantly.
Okay, this is a pet peeve of mine. Abstinence only education leads to ignorance and unplanned pregnancies. Condoms do work. Safe sex is safer than unsafe sex. You would think that that statement wouldn't need to be said, but apparently people don't get it. Telling people to not have sex largely doesn't work. Telling people that masturbation, sex, sexual thoughts, wet dreams, arousal, and anything else vaguely related is bad will not make people stop having sex. Under the Bush administration, abstinence only education (can you really call that education?) has gone up, and real sex ed has gone down. STDs and pregnancies have gone up. If people would quit polarizing the issue so much, and let the facts be neutral, we wouldn't have such problems. Instead of trying to prove condoms are evil or that abstinence doesn't work, let's get the facts out. Yeah, it's pretty hard to get pregnant if you don't have sex. Possible, (rape, and apparently Mother Mary) but hugely unlikely. The numbers on condom effectiveness are between 95 and 99% effective. Encourage people to hold off on sex until they're ready, and inform them that they could avoid pregnancy and STDs for when they are ready. Seems simple.
But for some strange reason, religious types tend to demonize this information. That and evolution seem to be popular targets for the religious right. I'm with Skafather, you guys can have your beliefs. That's fine, I don't really care. In fact, good for you if you find something that works for you. I mean that sincerely. However, when your beliefs start running contrary to verifiable fact, or your beliefs start getting legislated so that I have to follow them too, then I've got a problem with it.
Skafather is right, the massive sexual repression in this country (US, but this applies to many others) is due largely, if not entirely, to Christianity. It is patently unhealthy.
