WHat happens when the technocrats go berserk? If they don't depend on public opinion for their rule, who says they'll follow the will of the people? And if technocracy makes no attempt to follow the will of the people, who will hold these "smooth-thinkers" accountable for their actions?

Take a good look at all the world leaders who don't give a damn about public opinion. You will find that they are a nasty bunch.

The current civilization is not collapsing. And the technologically proficient have taken a point position for at least 150 years. In Europe the power shifted from the hereditary nobility to the productive industrial class so that technocracy is nothing new. Back in the 1830s and 1840s the English nobility came to the lecture of Michael Faraday and hung on every word he uttered. During the second world war, the fate of Britain hung on the productivity of the boffins. Barnes-Wallace was at least as important as Winston Churchill. In the U.S. the outcome of the Pacific War (will it be high casualty or lower casualty) hung on the activities of some rather eccentric people at Los Alamos. And so on and so on..

Technocracy has been in place ever since technological advance has depended on and flowed from scientific and engineer expertiise.

A good many historians indicate that WWII was won over the Japanese before the atomic bombs were dropped and that the Japanese pretty surely would have surrendered without the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The opinion is that the USA wanted to impress the USSR with its military might by using the atomic bombs.

Bull hockey! Study the Japanese stand at Okinowa. The Japs were nutsy Fagin. Or look at Saipan where civilians were jumping of cliff with their children in their arms. The Japanese were quite insane, you know. It took a couple of nukes to get the attention of the Emperor who was the God King of the Japs. The Japs were convinced in their Buishido way spirit was more important than weapons. How else do you explain the Banzai charges and the Kama Kazi?

as long as they can put a uniform on someone with a grade-school education and send them to shoot professors, it's not likely to happen.

As someone who served in the US Army during WWII and was aware of the nature of atomic energy before the bomb was dropped I have monitored the issues with much concern through the subsequent decades. I am sorry but I must agree with one of the concerned atomic scientists, Leo Szilard, who indicated in an interview (http://members.peak.org/~danneng/decision/usnews.html) that the use of the bomb against helpless civilians more or less constituted a war crime of immense proportions after indications were clear that Japan was at the point of surrender in 1945 before the bomb was dropped and that the alternative of a costly invasion of the Japanese mainland was a false issue used to justify the unnecessary horror. Szilard was very intelligent, very informed, and understood the issues better than someone driven by jingoistic emotional nationalistic hubris.

Of course, screwing and total faith are very emotional issues and difficult to distract attention from by intellectual inquiry, but it's worth the effort.

I do not see what is particular new on a Technocracy. We already live in one since centuries. How do else would call Sir Francis Walsingham oder William Cecil? Or the diplomats in Muenster and Osnabrueck how shaped 1648 Europe? Not a lot has been really changed. Ministers and parliamentarians come-and-go; the real ruling class, a network between high ranking managers and high ranking civil servants (should I count also the judges?) rule in the background, for a good part because or politicians are to dump and not long enough in office to understand what is really going on.
