If existence is so miserable, why the natural instinct to not only survive, but also to procreate?
You tell me.
I'm not the one who has a child.
I have never in my life had the desire to sire one.
Could you walk us through how/why you procreated?
Intimate details are optional.
The following is stating the obvious,
And I have touched on this many times.
Most people are at the mercy of 2 main factors:
1. Instincts as a result of the evolutionary process.
2. Social conditioning.
Will this suffice,
Or do you want me to elaborate?
Because the act leading to procreation feels so damn good! That's one of the examples of "not suffering" during existence.

Oh for goodness sake! Jason is one of the nicest people here on WP and a fellow NT parent.
Not only is he a very nice person,
He is very intelligent also.
Don't you forget about that.
I don't need NTs educating me.
And I wasn't the one who was casting aspersion.
I am merely defending my turf from unwanted intrusion.
BTW,
Why the influx of NTs?
There are billions of NT websites you guys could go to.
I specifically, repeat specifically, come here to be with my peers.

Uh... if that's a reference that includes me, I will state here and now that I have an official diagnosis for being on the autistic spectrum.

Sex is too personal to be shared with another person.
A porn site subscription, Misses Palmer and her 5 daughters is a much more sensible relief system, imo.
Well,
For some of us, at least.
And far cheaper,
With less need for the compromising of one's lifestyle.
Evolution has done an effective job on you,
And your genetic coding shall: "Inherit the Earth".
Alas,
Using an evolutionary context,
I am a failure and will be lost in the infinity of time well before the red sun engulfs the earth,
Which will also be lost in the infinity of time.
And so it continues. <chuckle>

You win.
You are so much smarter than me.
I'm OK with that.
I'm more into personal growth rather than social hierarchicalism.
It's not about that. It's about responsibility. Once you are a parent, your life is no longer about just yourself.
The subject of perpetual suffering is an interest of mine.
The irony here is that my tangent in this thread is less of a tangent than usual. <chuckle>
You have a negative attitude towards life.
And promoting your superiority.
People can refer back to it to confirm the validity of my statement.
Sheesh. And you have never spent one second to look through these two video clips that I have repeated posted.
Lenny Susskind was all upbeat and excited talking about Richard Feynman. Murray Gell-Mann on the other hand came across as bitter and hurt. The funny thing is, they were both talking about the same person. Surely Feynman was not the person that had problems. He continues to have a huge following, even decades after his death. Gell-Mann was the one that had the devil inside his head: he had inferiority complex (despite being a Nobel Prize winner, that's the ironic part). He let his inferiority complex bug him. He should have listened to the words of Eleanor Roosevelt: "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." Gell-Mann gave his consent. The problem was on his side.
Please refer to my paleontologist friend's comment: "The destiny of all species is extinction."
However, there is no need to be negative about life. Two things are certain in life: death and tax. Ha ha. But not because there is death, you need to feel negative about life. For the end of a species often leads to the beginning of another. The end of a life leads to the beginning of another. We are here to pass on the baton.
Where there is complex life,
There is suffering.
And I personally find it pointless.
A fairly simple concept, I would have thought.
You keep talking about suffering, but you have never defined suffering. You talk about suffering as if it is a concept that pre-exists, independent of life. You should look again into my friend's explanation about the arising of the concepts of good and evil. Suffering is there, to help with the continuation of life. It is because of the arising of the concepts of good and evil (which includes suffering), that life has managed to better survive and prosper. Suffering is a device that evolution has provided to us, so that we can survive and prosper, not on an individual level, but as a species. Suffering does not pre-exist as a concept. Suffering is a consequence of evolution and survival, and the fact that we come in generations. In short, contrary to what you believe, the true and only purpose of suffering is, to propagate life! So, talking about terminating life (especially at the level of a species) to eliminate suffering, is a non-sequitur.
You are entitled to your opinion. But remember, throughout the history of evolution, this line of thought pops up, all the time. Mother Nature puts all those species or sub-species out of their misery because they stop reproducing. And guess what? The remaining species/subspecies, almost by definition, now think they have a purpose in life.
We've already had Nietzsche and his nihilism. Nietzsche wasn't very bright. He was simply lazy. He was contemporary to Darwin. Nietzsche had all the information, but his brain did not work.
My point is: live positively and be happy. Or just step aside and let other people live positively and be happy.
That's the negativity I was referring to.

Your joking right?
You did pick up that you and your genetic coding will also be lost in the infinity of time?
It's just a matter of, err, time.

Moit,
No offence,
But I see your intrusion, err, intrusive.

If not,
I will know where you stand.

I'm not really sure there's an influx other than the parent forums, do you feel we come off differently and don't belong here?
The Last Golden Toad
He (it was a he)
emerged in early May,
shedding his coat of mold-stitched leaves,
stretching out a hind leg
to scrape each bright flank free.
He was ready —
he had been ready for eons —
to join his kind
beside the mountain pools,
alert for movement;
ready to leap astride a mottled female
and, holding her with his spongy feet,
writhe against her till some shudder
told him it was done.
It was as if there were a map
in his head,
though he couldn’t read,
did not know his name was Bufo periglenes,
did not know of Newton, Einstein, Darwin.
He couldn’t reason like you and I,
with our impure desires,
but he could feel — yes, he could feel;
don’t think he couldn’t!
And his desire was pure and shining,
golden like his skin, part of some complex design
so intricate, so labyrinthine,
that we could not grasp it
till it slipped from our hands.
There was a scientist who had watched the toads
for years, sometimes so thick and eager
they flung themselves upon her hiking boots.
And she saw him two years in a row,
in 1988 and 1989.
He sat there,
a solitary “Day-Glo orange jewel”
against the forest floor,
and he did not move.
He sat still and waited for a vessel
that never came,
because there was none, or if there was,
she was far away up the mountain,
alone by her own pool,
and she had no song or scent to fling
across the treacherous atmosphere
as a calling card
to conception.
It was not the earth that betrayed them;
it was us,
with our engines and emissions,
blow-drying our hair,
eating peaches out of season,
taking long showers, and
talking endless nonsense
about the meaning of life.
Would we have given all that up
for the golden toad
who sat alone
for two long springs,
peering into the stillness,
then burrowed into the earth
with a sense of something undone
and never came back again?

Well, they can and will come back. The problem is a technological one.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De-extinction
https://reviverestore.org/projects/woolly-mammoth/progress-to-date/
It is taking a long time. See, in the 1970s, they were already talking about reviving mammoths. It's 2020, now, so it's been about 50 years, and very little progress has been made. But we are heading there. It took 15 years to sequence the first human genome, at a cost of US$3 billion dollars. But nowadays we can sequence human genome in a matter of minutes https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/biotech/sd-me-illumina-novaseq-20170109-story.html, at a cost of about $100. The same thing will happen to de-extinction.
Sure, it's all very sad about extinction and humans causing it. But, frankly, we are just releasing carbon dioxide back to where it was once before. The rate of warming and extinction is too fast, that is for sure. We are reversing in a matter of decades what took Mother Nature millions of years to do.
But my overall take is that, we should move forward and not look back. I just don't believe in status quo. This is a quote that I like a lot: "Life, uh, finds a way." And life doesn't need to be DNA-based. There are plenty of things we can and should feel positive about.
