TL;DR: Scottish author Sir Walter Scott and, later, US general Winfield Scott.

Me too, I was today years old when I learned it's more associated with Doc Brown from Back To The Future.

Praise the lord.

The most miraculous part, chocolate is a New World food, so no one even knew just how lucky they were to get to taste it 1500 years early. :nerdy:

Guilty as charged, but I shamelessly stand by my words.
""Great Scott!" is an interjection of surprise, amazement, or dismay. It is a distinctive exclamation, popular in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, and now considered dated."

I'm not quite that old but Doctor Watson is, and as you probably noticed, that was the role I was playing when I made my playfully teasing remark. I was going to put "No s**t Sherlock," but I didn't like sounding like a young American sheeple type.

Now do Gordon Bennett.

Now do Gordon Bennett.

Quote:
The expression is thought to derive either from the controversial reputation of James Gordon Bennett Jr. (1841–1918), son of British-born James Gordon Bennett Sr., founder and publisher of the New York Herald, or as a minced oath, "perhaps a euphemistic substitution for gorblimey".

^Thanks.

But actually, thanks in particular because I'd never heard that term 'minced oath' before. I like it!

Dang, crikey, fudge, etc.

I've never been one for mincing oaths, and always found it ironic when adults with demonstrably smaller vocabularies than I possessed as a child would trot out the swearing is just a sign of a small vocabulary canard.

"Minced oath" - you mean like bar steward and ruddy heck?

I noticed a while back that it's hard to find an expletive that isn't an oath or a minced oath. I thought I was safe with "tarnation" (entire nation) but then I found out it stood for "damnation." What about "Bah!" ?

There's no way I'd go on holiday somewhere like that.
