For those who are unable to opt out by clicking on the opt out link, do you possibly have cookies disabled?

I think that the opt out is stored on cookies so if you have disabled cookies on your computer, it would never see the opt out cookie.

I clicked on an X on that pop up and I still have them,they freaked me out at first because I know I didn't do anything to those words.They bother me and they won't go away.And there's some ad for a school on the top left hand coroner and my thumb(I'm on a tablet) hits it all the time,it's really annoying.

Clicking on the X on the popup only serves to close that one particular popup. It does not opt out of any popups at all.

What's really meant is it's a test to see how invasive it is for the membership, and to see how many people actually click on stuff to get alex paid.

Ads aren't inherently bad - I've been shopping for a new computer desk, and lo and behold all of the ads I'm seeing on here are for office furniture - the question is whether they get in the way of the site to the point that I can't use it anymore. In my opinion, the infolinks do that and more. The only redeemable quality about them is that it's fairly straight forward to disable them (unless you're on a touch-based device, then you're out of luck - then again you're significantly less likely to be affected by them on a touch-based device anyway so...)

The real issue is the membership on this site makes up a small minority of the overall traffic - in essence, Alex is profiting off the people who only visit this site once or twice (and therefore don't opt-out of the ads), while hopefully sparing the contributing members of the site the aggravation of dealing with them (the ads).

Is there anyway to make things like ads and this kinda stuff go away altogether when logged in? I mean, is there any way to mod the forum software to make it like that? Other forums I've seen have that option (ie. "don't want to see ads? log-in or register"). As you say, if contributing members are only a small portion of the traffic surely the tiny fraction we represent in the generated site revenue can be affordably relinquished, and Alex can spare us the annoyances? And it'd be a good way to coerce new member sign-ups.

Too many ads and stuff make a site look "dodgy" IMO. I guess I'm just bothered that WP is considered a cash cow first and a community second.

I suspect that many web sites like this don't really bring in all that much money.

Change your browser to Firefox and install the "Adblock Plus" and "NoScript" add-ons.
You decide what ads get displayed on which site with a few mouse-clicks, so if you want one site to display some ads and block absolutely everything on another site - that's possible and very easily done.

I am using Firefox with Adblock and I got the Noscript add-on you suggested just then.

If contributing members represent such a small percentage of traffic why was Alex chastising us one time for using Adblock? Lets face it, more than half of the logged in members here are probably using Adblock anyway. Why not just do away with the ads for people that are logged in.

ETA: Ah there you go, SA forums have the thing where the ads go away upon joining but they use vbulletin.

Taken to its logical extreme - if everyone blocked all the ads then the site wouldn't be able to fund itself.
But it's a difficult call and I suppose it depends on the balance of users blocking ads vs. useful income still generated by everyone else.

It would be possible here, in theory, to do this with pbpBB, but this version is heavily modified and running in "maintenance mode" only - so major modifications are avoided because unexpected things tend to break when that's done.
