I am 65 years old. I came to my theory on this at 6 years old, and though open to other theories my entire life, what my 6 year old self believed still makes sense to me.
My 6 year old self believed [believes] that there truly is Good and there truly is Evil. And that when people do things kind, loving, and giving, it makes the Good [god?] more powerful. I also believed [believe] that when people do cruel things it makes the Evil stronger.
I believed [believe, at least somewhat] that many times the Good would like to do more to ease the suffering in the world but that the greed and selfishness and cruelty of so many people has made the Evil much stronger than the Good.
And since I am already coming off as "weird as hell," I would like to use a fairy tale that my 6 year old self believed [believes?] is how it works.
In Sleeping Beauty, Evil got pissed off and put a terrible curse that when the princess turned a certain age that she would be pricked with a spindle and die. But then the Good, who was not strong enough to destroy the curse from the Evil, was able to modify the curse, that the princess would not actually die but fall asleep for a hundred years until she was kissed by her "true love."
This concept of Good versus Evil made sense to me then, and still does today. Of course as I grew I became much more familiar with the incredible spectrum of grey, but I still believe that there are both enormous ammounts of good and evil that effect how the universe works.[how well "god" can answers our prayers]
Sounds like societal equilibrium where structures, institutions, and rules are built on the intentions and competencies (or lack thereof) of the actors/agents involved.
