That only shows that the Mayan educated class were superb mathematicians (they were, all things considered), not that the end of the world is coming then.

Besides, you can compute Mayan dates well past 2012.

I expect to be finishing up a Master's at that time.

12/21/2012 will be just like any other day.

Well it is all very complex but basically it will be the 21 Dec 2012 all day, people will die babies will be born, financial markets will rise and fall, the president of the USA will make a gaff, mums all around the world will tell their kids off for leaving their rooms in a mess etc. then at a nano second after12pm that night the 22 of December will begin, people will die, babies will be born ..................................................

Yeah, and it will be right after another presidential election. If Obama wins the 2008 election, he would probably be elected to a second term by than.

I was much more impressed by what ACTUALLY happened on November 19, 1999, at one minute to midnight.
That was the last time every digit of the time and date was an odd number...until 1:11AM, January 1st, 3111.

Why does the use of fractals to visualize the Mayan calendar bother you? Surely, the calendar has an arbitrary zero, and the fact that they designed it to 'run out of' time thousands of years from when it was developed is no indication that time itself will end. It's really no different than the car we had when I was a kid - after driving it 99,999 miles, the odometer could no longer count any higher. We were on vacation driving across Kansas when it reset to zero; the car kept running fine for more than a few miles.

This is what I have always thought too. I never understood all the gloom and doom. I just thought the Mayans were smart enought to figure out time where our solar system is concerned. I do not see the alignment of the planets to be a doomsday at all, but rather a new beginning...like an odometer resetting to zero and starting over again.

I think you just made a point there.In the way the Mayans kept time, the count resets to zero, just like the Odometer in your car. That's basically all that will happen, the Mayan count goes back to zero. The Mayans must have thought that the count resetting to zero would cause great upheavals. That is near impossible that will happen.

I'm curious to know if anyone here believes all of that cosmic alignment is going to cause our poles to shift and our volcanoes to spew. I find those theories quite interesting.

I saw a documentary a couple years ago with opinions of those who would claim it has. I do not claim to know though.

Edit: So, is there going to be a planet alignment in 2012 or 2040 or both? I've been under the impression the Mayan calendar end and the alignment were to occur at the same time...

nah, the mayan calander is a different alignment...not planetary. still an impressive feat...especially considering it's a much bigger alignment than simply visible planets (the mundi article about the mayans talk briefly about it).
