He has a different belief system just as you have a different one, he believes that science is the answer for all, while you may believe science is just a tool for some knowledge but not for all.

Do it the old-fashioned way. Do it the way Buddha and Jesus did it.

The point I was trying to make is that some people need religion to feel good, while others are capable if finding peace in non-religious settings.

I happen to be of the latter sort.

well, yes, I do agree with that.

I believe in science, but it is not my God. My God died on the Roman cross for the sins of all mankind. Science, when made into a Higher Power, has no ethics or morality or life-lessons to provide. It has no moral centre and thus the individual relies on situational ethics.

Aside from contributing to the wealth of religious leaders, there is nothing that religion contributes to society that can not be contributed by secular authority.

Well in most cases this is true however I find a certain peace within my faith I cannot get from a purely secular source. I am of course speaking of the afterlife. However I do not follow any particular religious authority, preferring to make my own interpretations (hence my current signature). I know quite well I could be fooling myself, but even you'd have to admit that it's better to be wrong in your own ideas then to blindly follow the wrong ideas of others.

I find peace in libraries, observatories, and laboratories. There is just something peaceful about getting close to the truth that religion can not provide.

As if you would know. How could you know unless you've had religion in your life at some point? It would surely kill you to make an illogical statement.

I've had religion, having spent two years in a seminary as a student, and several more years as a missionary, church worker, chancel choir member, and elder.

So I know exactly how religion works, and I'll not be giving up my engineering degree any time soon.

Fnord, you claim to have done everything and been everywhere. If it supports an argument, you'l mention it. I knew a guy who did the same thing.

I remember I heard someone saying this: if Jesus lived today, he would have been accused of terrorism by the Bush administration.

Do not post lies about me. I do not claim to have done anything that I haven't actually done. Nor do I claim to have been anywhere that I haven't actually been. I've done a lot of things and been a lot of places. It's called living. And having lived 2 to 4 times longer than it seems most people on WP have lived, that accounts for a lot.

Bad experience (curious)?
I ask this, because I was religious too, but as I am skeptical about religion, I don't try to abolish it, for people who might want it, might this be for personal experience in religion or for personal reasons?

My only personal issue about religion is to not influence governments and laws (Separation of Church and State) other than that, it's their right, doesn't it?

I am wondering what engineering degree would have to do with religion.

And why would anyone have to give up an engineering degree to have religion? These two areas are hardly mutually exclusive. But I won't belabour the question because it really doesn't matter to anyone except Fnord.

Several, both secular and religious. But it was the way those bad experiences were handled by religious leaders that put me off. It seems that their first solution to every problem is to fall on their knees, close their eyes and mumble at the floor or shout at the ceiling. Their second solution is to tell the victim that they somehow deserved to suffer for having done something to offend their god. Their third solution is to hand you a tract.

Whereas secular society allows for physicians, lawyers, police, trial-by-jury, and so forth.

I would abolish religion in favor of education and knowledge, since it is preferrable to me to hear an explanation of how an event came about than to have my inquiries waved off with a 'goddidit' excuse.

greenblue wrote:

Sure, it's their right. So are ignorance, intolerance, and indifference, especially when done in the name of their particular religion.

The last great religious put-off I experienced was when I spoke to some kids at a church event about the joy and satisfaction I derive from the engineering work I do. Then along comes the youth pastor, who tells them that having ambition for a science or engineering degree goes against God's plans for them. He may as well have told them that I was going to Hell, and that they would follow along right behind me with their science dgrees in their hands.

Now those kids are questioning the validity of a higher education in favor of a lifetime spent preaching a gospel of ignorance.
