Why isnt there anything out there for adults with AS?
I can see why some would want a cure. I sure didn't have an easy time being a teen: I wanted to fit in, but all I could do was to stand out, or step aside. Being an outsider didn't feel good. Additionally, so much of my personality is hard-wired. Where does my Asperger's end, and where do I begin? What part of me is choice, and what part is in my genetic makeup? And it sure would be nice to instinctively know what to do in social situations. I can learn social skills, but instincts are hard-wired.
That being said, I fall more into the "anti-cure" camp than the other. Being an outsider has enabled me to be an observer with a unique perspective on life. I can choose which social "rules" to observe with no attachment to the game. I don't have to be a slave to fashion; I don't have to allow myself to feel pressure to date; I don't have to be ruled by my emotions. I know what to do with myself when alone, and silence doesn't scare me. My Asperger's also makes me really good at tasks involving research, repetition and recall (the three Rs! ha ha). Some NTs like that I am loyal, don't play games, and always bring something interesting to the conversation. As for those who don't, I don't give them the satisfaction.

They can't really change us anyway. Just like there's never been a cure for Downs Syndrome there will never be a cure for Autism. Though many will advertise cures because its big business to bilk money from parents.
Please read this....this guy is saying what I have been trying to say for the past few years...only he is visable, so perhaps someone will listen ?

Good story. Yes, we're out here. Some of us have even started to learn what's wrong with us. And - let's not be shy about this - we're more than a little pissed off about getting shortchanged on our lives.

pissed off about getting shortchanged? I am astonished and astounded that I was not just killed off. That is what they did where I lived when I grew up. I myself had somehow survived when my cousins took me 'swimming' and when they tossed me out of the back of a station wagon to tumble and spin my flesh right off my body.
they had no more compunctions about doing it as drowning a little of unwanted kittens! I shudder to think of all of us that didn't survive being 'not right'.

just-me, I've noticed this as well, for often the media as well as the medical and social community tend to focus more on children and often forget, that those children do eventually grow up as, it's not like we simply disappear when we become older than 18yrs.
For myself, I've been trying to find such means and services as such with some positive results mainly from the fact, I tend to live in a city which has a university with a department that is geared to helping not only parents of Autistic children but, teenagers and adults as well like myself
. I'll admit this may not be the case for many Aspies which, I fully empathise with therefore, hopefully there are people out there that will start get the ball rolling or atleast make the necessary strides towards such things..

X I'm glad to hear that there is somthing in your area geared twards adults!
I hope that as more adults with AS and other pdd's come foward looking for help, the community in which they live in will start supporting there efforts to get help info and spread awareness.
I hope that this will in turn lead to more global awarness about adult AS and the like.
Sadly I have not gotten any responce by email from autism speaks. I dont know why but I hope it is just that because they havent gotten to my email yet.
Perhaps I will write again.
I am glad to see that things are moving foward for you ProfessorX. keep us posted on anything you have learned that may help.
I have noticed That aspergers is becoming more widely know, even in the media. I was watching terminator, the sarah connor chronicles.
There was a scene in there where the robot cameron went to a therapist when they were undercover looking for information .
He tried to diagnose her with AS.
I noticed this and I realized that info about AS is becoming more main stream. This makes me think that it is only a matter of time before adults start reciving more attention in the medical fields and more resources become available to us.

I'm very sad that had to happen to anyone. I have often thought about the victoms of abuse that never survived to tell there stories.
My hart goes out to them.
I also hope that you can heal your emotinal wounds from your hard past. If you ever need to talk just pm me.
I found a very comprehensive document on service needs for adults (really shows up what we're not getting), which can apply to many countries, and read through it today:
http://www.nas.org.uk/content/1/c4/39/26/takeresp.pdf
Wow!
That's quite a find.
I'd recommended anyone on the spectrum to read that.

Rubbish.
Autism will be cured within the next 15 years.

That's rubbish. They don't even admit the existence of adults and most will never receive a DX but are still breeding more little aspies . Especially since the females amongst us, who also carry the genes, seem to have less difficulty getting laid, thanks to the "open-mindedness" of horny males .
And cured of what ? A socially defined characteristic of what "normal" is...like not being gay or black ? The definition of "normal" will change before they can exterminate...I mean "cure" us all . Some of us will never be brain washed into believing that we have to become more NT to be valuable people and we are not the one's spending all day on utube, playing video games or mourning the lose of our ability to be NT . Self-loathing is the down fall of all oppressed minorities and the first battle we have to fight to win self definition and they can not cure the self defined because we know that difference does not equal defective.

You see it as self-loathing because you (seemingly genuinely) appear to regard your Autism as making you who you are.
I don't loathe myself - indeed, I have rather a soft spot for me ... but I DO loathe what Asperger's has done and continues to do to my life.
I regard my AS as obscuring, detracting from and impairing my personality and capabilities - which is why I want rid of it.
I am not my affliction - just as schizophrenics are not their schizophrenia.
I hope you can draw a litte enlightenment from that.
