What's the difference between a religion and a cult?
The ONLY church I know of that isn't so much like a cult is the Salvation Army. They tend to celebrate, rather the recite scriptures.
I would guess that you've not been around many (any?) UU churches.
Go to church for yourself and get some actual experience before shooting your mouth off.
wait, people in church dont gather to sing and pray together?
The fact that you did not like it and had a rather childish reaction does not make it a cult. You wouldn't know a cult if it bit you in the ass.
This is personal.
you sound like a mormon

That's just it--they do.

I'm Catholic.

Um, honestly I think he's dead on. Think about it what goes on in the church, especially things like communion (That's what they called it when I was forced into this crap) where you eat bread and drink wine as if it were Jesus's flesh and blood. That creepy s**t can be compared with what a lot cults do. I personally find it funny though when someone tells me they're Catholic since the image of them doing that comes up in my head. It's quite hilarious looking at it from the outside, although I can understand you feel it's perfectly normal since you're in the bubble. Perhaps it's perfectly normal though for members of certain cults as well though to pretend to be drinking blood. Just try to see it as we do is all I'm saying.

It's not a childish reaction, its simply the way it is. In a previous post on this thread I explained why I think people look at cults in a negative light but don't have any issues with religion.
There is no real difference in religion/church and cults.... think about it.
Both have belief systems and rituals, weither its chanting to the sky, or singing a hymn.
People call new religions cults because they are new and there is little understanding of it, but the old cults like Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are called religions because they have been around for so long, everyone is just used to them.

All religions started out as cults originally. But by "cult" do you mean a destructive group or just a new religious movement? There seem to be guidelines that tell a cult apart from a dangerous cult.

However, most mainstream religions also are similar to an extent.

there is a difference between an offshoot of a religion and a cult. Same as religious fundamentalism and cults.

1. Abusive treatment of people - God killed people left, right, and center in the the old testament, not to mention the wars caused by religion, and the killing of women who people thought where witches.
2. Authoritarian rule, non-democratic, removes free choice - The Catholic church used tourtue during the middle ages to convert pagans to christanity. Free thinking such as ideas outside of religion was considered work of the devil (hard-core catholics actually believe that it was the devil that placed dinosuar bones in the earth)
3. Use of power, fear, intimidation, and manipulation to control - The taliban used all of these methods to control people.
4. Thrives in secrecy - I am sure that the vatican has a treasure trove of secrets, but won't reveal them because it wants to keep it's grip on the people.
5. Demands a complete break from family, friends and life deemed to be a bad influence - God was a bad influence on Abraham by making him attempt to kill his son. (I don't care what people say, this is one of the sickest stories in the bible)
6. God-like leader - Well, god is god.
7. Usually demands considerable amounts of money from its members - Many religions, catholic and scientology just to name a few, have lots of money, but don't pay taxes.
Overall religion and cults are the same, people don't consider religions like judaism, christianity, islam, ect. cults because they are just used to them and they have been around for thousands of years, but new stuff like scientology is very easy to target as a cult even though it is offically recognized as a religion. Paganism has been seen as a cult because of it's history of being alienated by the major religions, dispite paganism being much older then them.
People gathering every sunday in a building, singing and praying to a god in unison..... sounds like a cult to me.
there is a difference between religious fundamentalism and a cult. look at the specific definition of a religion and of a cult.

I have, which is why I listed what they have in common.
Cults and religions all have a belief system and ritiuals that focus on their god, leader, ect.
which technically means they are the same. If there is a religion that people tend to dislike or have no understanding of, they will give it a negative name like 'cult'.
It all boils down to the popular group ganging up on the new kid.

WRONG.
I say again, you wouldn't know a cult if it bit you on the ass.
As always, when I state something in a post, I back it up. All you are doing is saying 'wrong' and thats it! Tell me WHY you think what I am saying is wrong, so far all you are doing is going on the blind defensive when someone says something that you don't like.
I have been to numorus churches: United, Salvation Army, Catholic, Anglican, Pentecostal,
and they ALL meet on sunday, sing hymns, ect. This is a routine that followers of a religion take part in, much like cults. You just don't happen to like cults or at least the word for the same reasons that I states in my last post.
If it's anyone that doesn't know what A cult is I think its you.

God and leader are different. the purpose of religion and a cult are different.

When I say cult, I mean a high-control organization. It can be a religious group, a pyramid scheme, some 12 step groups, etc.
I was raised in in the Mormon cult. Mormons have their lives micromanaged to the point of there being a rule for absolutely everything under the sun, from what you wear, to the length of your hair (the hair thing is just men), to how many earrings you have (women only. Men can't have earrings.), to how you raise your kids, and on and on and on. On top of this, the leaders have a very long history of lying about, well, everything. They manage to keep the devout among them away from any truth by telling them that reading criticisms of the church is worse than viewing pornography.
During the super-secret endowment ceremony, initiates pledge all of their time and talents, not to God, or even Jesus, but to the church itself. Until 1991 (or was it '90?) the same ritual required a pantomimed pledge to have your tongue ripped out and be disemboweled, should you ever tell what went on in the temple. The endowment ceremony is also where you learn the secret handshakes that get you into the Celestial Kingdom (the highest degree of Mormon heaven). Then there's all of the naked touching by old people. These are temple workers I am referring to, and they are always elderly. They perform this weird thing called washing and anointing, where they reach inside of a paper sack thing that you are wearing, and bless your body parts by touching you from your head on down. This includes parts that you don't want elderly strangers touching.
I have an in depth knowledge of Mormonism, so I'll stop here, lest my Aspiness takes over and I ramble on forever about it. Suffice it to say, they are a cult in every (negative) sense of the word.
I grew up in a family who went to Christian Science church. My parents (like many in the church) did not pressure us about forgoing medical treatment. We all went to doctors as needed, but did not take regular physicals. We all went to the Dentist for yearly exams and treatment. I only mention this to point out that there is a spectrum in religion too.
I am now in my 50's and long ago stopped believing in that religion. In fact, I am agnostic or weak atheist- depending on the definition. I don't believe in any gods, but am open to the idea if any evidence appears. I recognize that the possibility exists for "God", however unlikely. More likely if there is a "God" it would not be a sentient being, but could be defined as those principals which make the universe universally consistent with itself. An example would be cause and effect.
