Moderators Hacked My Accounted!

The site is family friendly with the exception of that one forum.
That one seems to provide a great deal of release to a number
of us. I'm not sure that there's any way to allow it to continue,
and provide protection such that we can be certain that no one
will access it. One can wander into the foulest parts of the internet,
without more than a mouse click.

We try. It's like a supermarket selling playboy - it's on the top shelf.
Make it a little harder, and less will go for it, but you can't prevent
everyone.



I certainly didn't mean to say that it's not my job. We do have
differing views on the level of interdiction. But, we try and respect
one another's views and decisions. I'm probably the most guilty of
violating that trust, and am somewhat ashamed of it - though I've
only done so in the name of free speech, which I feel fairly strongly
about. Still, it troubles me.



That was my guess. Along with the areas which I frequented,
and that in those posts, I was fairly stable, in terms of not
attacking others.

Let's TALK about it then. All of us. Uh, not at the same time though, 11,292 posts at one time would be really hard to keep up with.

What do moderators feel is their duty? How much time do they want to spend on their duty? Do they feel they have lost some privileges or protections as a result of becoming moderators?

What do members feel is the duty of moderators? How much time do members think moderators should spend on their duty? Do members feel they have lost some priveleges or protections as a result of having more moderators?

Yes, moderators CAN lose some privileges and protections, as it has been suggested that moderators should be open to attacks on their power. And moderators seem to be ALWAYS on duty, even in their time off, when they just want to post and relax.

I don't think a lot of people realize that. Same screen name, but no matter when they are on, it seems once they become a moderator, they end up getting dragged off for the call of duty.

Anyone who has kids or has babysat know what it's like. You don't get to be YOU (by yourself) anymore. You ALWAYS are You: The Parent. And for giving up that freedom, you then get pouting and temper tantrums. That's for being a moderator or a parent.

A person being a moderator is not a member's license to complain. We members may not be able to delete spam. But we do have a say in our own actions and reactions. And as a group can pretty much discourage any problems that arise.

As far as swearing, even masked vulgarity is still swearing. If there are kids on the site, and there are, then we do not swear. Consider this site as one big room with groups, and realize that the kids in the internet room can wander from conversation to conversation, invisibly.

If you would not be comfortable discussing something or swearing in front of a group of youngsters, and are pretty sure you'd get popped in the nose by a parent of one of those youngsters for swearing or discussing something, then don't swear and don't discuss it. Duh.

As far as the "Adult" forum, I do believe it needs a name change at the very least. I have already mentioned that in one PM to one moderator.

I do not know what is possible on this site, but I have seen on other sites that discussions or sections can be made so that ONLY the title and description show up. NO ONE can read the messages until they have been approved by the moderator or owner or creator of that section.

Likewise, the membership is invisible, so that no one outside of that membership can see who posts.

That would be the equivalent of having a doorkeeper in this giant room with a separate area for adult discussion. Someone has to let the person in, and that person is let in only if they are an adult.

No, I probably wouldn't want a child to be around swearing or some of the discussions. I was stunned to read a news story about fifth grade kids having sex in the classroom when there was an assembly and nobody came and got that class. FIFTH GRADE. Yikes.

Open, honest discussions are great. However, if one person complains in seriousness over material that is available, since this IS supposed to be for all ages, could the site be shut down? Does anyone know?

Then we would all lose.

Could it not be changed so that people fill in their date of birth when they sign up, then the Adult Section is only shown to over 18 etc. And the Kids is only shown to uner 18s and moderators? Or something like that?

Yeah I guess that's true.
I think if the kids are that young that they would be traumatised by seeing anything in there anyway then it should probably be the parents' responsibility. Kids can see anything on the internet really.

Even the missing episodes of Doctor Who? Even, *gasp* Fury from the Deep? Or perhaps even, *evenbiggergasp* Marco Polo?

Some kind of cookie-based age verification thing would work. Have it to where the first time you clicked, it asked you to input, at the least, the year of your birth. At most, full birth date. After the initial "check" (which, granted, could be bypassed by lying) then you don't get hassled by it as long as you're at the same terminal / computer.

Any safeguard has flaws, but this would make it a bit more obvious that it isn't quite the same as the rest of the board.
