I remember when portion size became a marketing point. I have a friend who believes he hasn't had enough until he feels full and I had to stop going out to eat with him because he was gaining weight from it even though we only went out once a month and was nearing 400lbs.

It has always astounded me what people call a portion size. People who would bake but made meals that were enough to feed a family than people of two or one and they were always fat. My husband always had a habit of making too much food and his excuse was he is used to cooking for the whole family. So I got used to having leftovers. No way was I going to waste food. As a child, there as rarely any leftovers because my mom would make just enough for the whole family and rarely did we have leftovers for dinner and back then I was not fond of leftovers because they didn't taste as well when cooked fresh. Bot my ex's made too big of portions, my first one would made himself spaghetti but it would be enough to maybe feed four people but instead it was all for him and he would eat it out of a kettle or mixing bowl. My other ex would cook meals and make them big enough to feed a family of four. One time he made oatmeal and there was many leftover. I got up the next day and scooped myself a bowl leaving some for him that was enough for one breakfast bowl. Ne said that was hardly a bowl and called me self centered for it. No, that was a normal serving. He just liked to eat so damn much. Yes, they were all fat. This is a pattern I have noticed in fat people, their portions always tend to be big enough to feed a family. Another person I would run into at work when I worked in a immigrate building, she was also very big and I always saw candy wrappers and TV dinner boxes or fast food in her trash can when I would empty it. I couldn't help but think this is why she is fat. This was daily what i saw in her trash can, sometimes she would bring in her own lunch like her own sandwich she would make but lot of times it was the other stuff and chips.

Some people do try to eat healthy but don't realize TV dinners are not healthy even though they are marked as such on the box. They are calorie indensity and do not keep you full. The portion is very small. Also people think food is automatically magic weight loss just because it's listed as fat free or sugar free or lean cruisiene or as fitness health or just because it's healthy. You can gain weight on healthy food, it's all about calories in and calories out. But there is some foods you can eat more with and still lose weight or maintain your weight because while the servings are larger, there is less calories in it so it allows you to eat more to compensate for the calories you need. It's a matter of knowing what foods to eat. Lot of people eat the wrong foods so they are overweight as a result and most people eat by hunger, than by the clock. Most people eat until they are full than by portion size and servings.

I actually read that very few people can eat intuitively and stay thin within healthy range. My cat was that way, I could leave cat food out all the time and she would only eat it when hungry and stop when full and she was never fat while for some cats, the owners can't leave food out all the time or their cat would be eating it all the time and not knowing when to stop and they get fat as a result so they have to only give them a 1/4 of a cup each day to monitor their eating so they won't overeat. It's the same with humans too. The problem is, lot of us don't even know what hunger is, we eat when we are bored, we eat when we are stressed, we eat when we focus and whenever there is food around. Plus our parents make us clean our plates as children so that throws off our hunger cues and teaches us to overeat. I have seen a study showing that most people eat and don't even realize they are doing it because it's right there and they were sitting there snacking while they are concentrating and then they don't remember they have eaten it. Study has also shown that lot of people don't remember what they have eaten the day before or the day before that or what they have eaten this day so that is why people keep a food journal when they are losing weight.

There is that BBC show called Secret Eaters and it showed all this. People on the show have always been amazed at how much they were actually eating. Lot of people underestimate their calorie intake. Mind you, all these people have bee overweight. Then they would start losing the weight after keeping track of their calorie intake and paying attention to what they are eating. Plus lot of people might not realize how many calories a coffee has they bought or how much in a snack they bought from the coffee shop. When people snack, they also don't realize how many calories they are consuming, then they wonder why they are not losing weight.

There are all these shows out there about this stuff to educate people so they become aware.

On My 600 Lb Life, I have always been amazed at how big their meals are like they eat at breakfast how much a average size person would eat in four days. Like eating a whole entire large pizza while for me, 2-3 slices would be enough for a meal to fill me. But for a 600 lb person, one big pizza isn't even enough to satisfy them. I bet if I handed one of them a bowl of mac and cheese in a large breakfast bowl, they would feel I was starving them because to them that wouldn't even be a meal while that would be for me and my kids. I can't imagine how big their food bill must be every month and that includes take outs and fast food. I just imagine how much money they would be saving if they simply ate less, eat as much as a 160 lb person would eat at their height. They would lose it very fast.

I remember when I was losing weight, I would cut a slice of cake into a half piece than my normal slice and I made a comment to my mom about it and she said that was actually a normal sized slice I was having. I was shocked. It's not like my slice was 1/6 of the piece, it was actually 1/8. That has always been my normal serving of cake. Then I started to cut it into 1/16.

In restaurants, I could never have dessert because I would always be too full from the food. Now I just doggy bag it so I can have some dessert. My parents will eat out and eat half on their plate and bring the rest home. That is the way it's supposed to be in the US. You eat out, enjoy the food, bring the rest home and enjoy it at home. You're not actually supposed to clean your plate, this is a hidden thing I had figured out as an adult about our American culture of eating out. That is why our portions are so big.

Well, you are supposed to stop when you are full but because he was nearing 400 lbs, his stomach was probably big because he had made it that size from simply over eating. That is why weight loss is so hard because when you are losing weight, you are always hungry and it takes time for your tummy to shrink for you to feel full sooner. It takes time for your body to get used to having less food again it doesn't need.

leahbear is a real person/poster on this forum. I brought her post to your attention in another thread when she posted that she was very reluctant to talk about the connection between gut health and ASD on the forums because of the way I am treated here for speaking the truth.

I was going to say I haven't ever had so much as a pm conversation with her, but logged in to see a pm from here to which I just replied.

I wrote that stuff over 5 years ago & now there are medical studies that prove exactly what I've been sharing here.

What makes you think that I'm so special that I would be the only one on these forums to learn these things about ASD & then share them with others it can help? :?

Like all good religious fanatics, I'm sure you see nothing wrong with a "pious fraud" so stop with the socks. I think Ez nailed it.

Feel free to PM the mods/admins and have them check leahbear's IP vs. mine or w/e you need to satisfy your curiosity. leahbear is not me. leahbear is a real, entirely different, human being - and according to their profile is female.

It's rather amusing to me that you both think I was somehow going to be the only poster on these forums to figure out the intestinal gut dysbiosis cause of ASD symptoms. Seems leahbear is one of the next ones. And there will be another, and then another, and them more after that. Whether another 5 years, 10, or 15, it'll eventually become common knowledge. Heck, there are already ASD medical studies published all about it: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5408485/

I partially blame parents for over-eating.

Once a child if full, they should be allowed to stop eating. I've seen far too many parents force a child to keep eating past the point of satiation because they don't want to "waste" food.

Seriously, if your kid is full, they're full. Maybe you should consider giving them smaller portion sizes instead of insisting they "clean their plate" every meal.

My personal philosophy is, stop before you feel full. Though I will say, some people can't feel full. This can happen in people with Prader Willi Syndrome or people with hunger sensing hormone issues or people on certain medications. Their stomach feels no different after they ate tham before they ate. These people need to stick to strict calorie counting.

I know people from Ireland and the UK who are shocked at the sheer amount of food served as a single meal in American restaurants.

I was thinking more like a tipping point or the hundredth monkey principal than domino effect, but however you need to conceptualize it in order to comprehend is a-okay with me.

I do find it rather comical that you call yourself a scientist but then dismiss the ASD science in medical studies because it doesn't fit your fantasy that ASD cannot be treated. *shrug* whatever, though, I've said it several times over: You're not obligated to treat your own symptoms, ever. But that doesn't mean that treatments don't exist nor that they shouldn't be available to those that want them.

American gluttony knows no borders.. according to all of my family members who have taken cruise vacations, they can always tell which guests are Americans by the massive heaping platefuls of food in front of them paired with the largest cups of pop available for breakfast even. It's like "eating contest," has become the USA's national sport or something.

It's not that I've never overeaten or never do, I'm just conscious of how unhealthy And wasteful it is. It's a bit ironic that America seems to bill itself as a "Christian nation," whenever it suits them, but doesn't seem to acknowledge gluttony as a sin for how harmful it is to their own health as well as the environment's for food production etc etc not to mention allowing poor people to starve at their big bellies' expense.

I work in a lab and studied Geology, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology at Uni for four years (and continued to do so for all the years that followed on my own). I really don't care what you think of my credentials because of my opinion of your pet topic, which is dangerous pseudoscience and quackery.

The reality for autistics is that this is what we are, and its not going to change. So instead of trying to change what cant be changed (our neural wiring and etc) what should be changed is the horrible intolerant "society" of NTs.

Anyway, this is a thread on sugar taxes. And you are derailing it in your usual fashion.

I'm not religious at all, and think the Bible is at best an absurd work of fiction.

Religious Americans who are Conservatives usually subscribe to the Gospel of Wealth. I'm sure you know this.

Only from this forum. I've never heard of the "Gospel of Wealth," outside of this forum - and we have pretty much every major religion in the world represented here, including many Christian faiths. AFAIK the "Gospel of Wealth," is something that's been made up here on WP. Doubtful, but I'm just saying.. this is the Only place I've ever heard of it.

Does the Gospel of Wealth preach being a glutton?

What I meant is that they take their wealth and success as evidence of Gods favor and see nothing wrong with their extravagances. Most simply ignore the parts of the Bible where Christ lived a simple life and preached giving what you have to the poor.

That's almost all so-called Christians, but if there's a denomination that worships wealth (another anti Christian thing.. false idols and all that) then I guess they take it to extreme lengths.

Religion & Spirituality are not inherently evil things.. organized religion, OTOH, is no bueno.
