From what i remember, He wrote code, stayed up late drinking coca cola, was a typical computer programmer nerd in the 70's. So yes, he was surrounding by a lot of other skilled 'aspie' people. But he has the traits underlying his own personality. Mixed in with some megalomania, from the runaway success he had.

Too many famous people are "diagnosed" based solely on appearing weird, nerdy, and so on. Gates does rock back and forth during public appearances an autistic trait making speculation somewhat more valid than typical.

As far as Mark Zuckerberg is concerned the man has demonstrated he has a savant level understanding of the communication needs of NT's so I doubt it.

Of course, aspies can be bad or even evil people, the diagnosed school shooters come to mind. With Musk we don't not know anything. After his brief remarks on SNL he has not talked about it again. We don't know how he came to this conclusion. Also his "reveal" occurred on a comedy show so it is plausible he was trolling people speculating about his neurology. I meant "amazing" more in a literal sense, not necessarily that it is amazingly great. I was not diagnosed until I was 55 and back then less then a decade ago there was such a stigma around autism most most TV shows refused to acknowledge their "interesting" character was autistic. We were just 4 years removed from Autism Speaks running a fundraising ad comparing Autism to a satanic character that has taken possession of cute NT kids. So to have Time magazine naming openly autistic people as their person of the year twice in the last three years is amazing to me.

I hope no one is suggesting that being on the Autism Spectrum is inconsistent with being successful. I also hope no one is suggesting Autistic traits that make your life more difficult don't count if you are really good at coping with or masking the traits.

Personally, unless there was a formal diagnosis I don't think we should assert that someone is definitely on the Spectrum, but speculation seems like fair game—especially if some Autistic traits are apparent. With us not-famous folk it takes a professional formal assessment to determine if someone is on the Spectrum or not, I see no reason to believe a famous person can be definitively assessed by us based on what we see in the media.

Some find it interesting or entertaining, like other things some find interesting or entertaining. And parents of a child just diagnosed might find it reassuring to think the diagnosis doesn't mean their kid cannot possibly do well in life.

I've heard a rumor that if you've met one Autistic then you've met one Autistic.

There's an interesting autobiographical book written by Australian author Gerald Stone who worked in the early days of the Australian media before becoming a writer. I can't recall the title of the book but it detailed the rise of two powerful media families (both billionaires) in Australia whom Stone worked closely with. The Packers and the Murdochs (the latter today are a global media giant).

Stone was very clear that in order for these families to rise to become the power as billionaires they cut deals, Not just with corrupt politicians but also with underworld mafia bosses. It opened my eyes how cut throat the business world is, both families may have worked with criminal networks who had to be worked with in order to secure control of unions/workforces and manipulating circumstances to land profitable ventures/contracts.

The road to becoming a billionaire is not clean. I think all wealthy men make deals that compromise their integrity. It might sound completely counter to what a person on progressive side of politics might say, but if Elon Musk wanted the capital to change the world in a positive way by himself, then I can't criticise him for sometimes allowing himself to compromise his ethics as there doesn't seem to be any way to avoid getting your hands dirty.

Reminds me of a certain former US politician who still holds a lot of power by threatening the lives of family members of current politicians.

(I know this is the wrong forum to talk about that  )

I don't think there's widespread knowledge of this and the general public stereotype of autism/AS does not intersect with Elon Musk anyway.

Once again we are debating an issue that only bubbles to the surface in autism chat forums and no where else.

Social media just labels Musk as "a little strange"

I'm sure you studied his biography, watched all his videos, waded diligently through the evidence, before coming to that conclusion

And he was one of the original cast members.

They both appear like high functioning aspies to me. Bill gates, i know a bit about him, he definitely has underlying traits. Zuckerberg i don't know much about, other than he can be kinda awkward socially.

Microsoft was not built by just Bill Gates. It was Gates and Steve Balmer. They completed each other. It was Balmer who sold Gates’s ideas. So maybe. As for Christine McGinness scripting is a known autistic trait that is useful for entertainers. Also more “wierdness” is expected and tolerated and celebrated then from the average person. There is a reason Hollywood is sometimes referred to as Hollyweird.

You forgot Paul Allen.

Assuming that Musk is indeed on the spectrum, despite his shortcomings, I would rather have him and Gates as a representative of us than some incel spree killer.

That said, when do we start speculating on Bezos?

Why not Temple Grandin? she's a Professor of Animal Biology and probably a lot smarter than Elon Musk.
I also think the incels who get highlighted in the media aren't typically labelled autistic except possibly Adam Lanza.

She would be good as well, as would Greta Thunberg.

I focused on Musk and Gates because they were the subjects of this particular thread.

I like Greta Thunberg. More because she annoys conservative climate deniers than anything else

Elon Musk Is a Hero—but Not for the Reason You Think | Opinion
Mathieu Vaillancourt is a writer. He holds a degree in International Development and Globalization
This column was published by Newsweek

Quote:
Time Magazine announced this week that Elon Musk, the Tesla/SpaceX CEO and world's richest man, was their pick for person of the

The decision was not uncontroversial. Some called out Musk's privilege ("Sometimes I forget that Elon Musk has always been a privileged rich kid") while others suggested alternative picks (Officer Eugene Goodman, who stopped the January 6 rioters, was popular, as were the inventors of the vaccine) and others still brought up the fact that America's schoolchildren might have been more apt, given all they had suffered.

The controversy evolved further after Musk took the opportunity the day after the announcement to mock Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, calling her "Senator Karen" after Warren tweeted that Musk didn't pay enough in taxes and comparing her to an angry mother.

Asperger's Syndrome is a form of autism and one I know well, because I, too, have Aspergers. And it meant the world to me to learn that a superstar like Elon Musk has the same syndrome.

Like Musk, I am one of the lucky ones. I have a university degree and stable employment. But many more people with autism live challenging, difficult lives than are billionaires.

Musk isn't just the world's richest man, though. He's a brilliant inventor. And he did the impossible: He made electric cars cool. And he made space travel exciting again.

This is not to say there is no room for criticism. We can ask what is the utility of mocking a senator calling for higher taxes on the rich. We can be critical of Tesla's business model, too, which has relied on a lot of subsidies from the government. We can ask if Tesla cars will be able to be mass-marketed and accessible to middle-class families, and whether the batteries for electric cars will still pollute the air.

We can also point out that Musk has gone above and beyond in placating China to gain access to the Chinese market, even defending China's tough data laws that have been used to surveil Chinese citizens.

But we should also give credit where credit is due: Elon Musk made something as obtuse as electric cars something into with an edge. He turned electric cars from the Trabant into the Lamborghini.

And if I'm being honest, it seems to me that that's probably something only a neurodivergent person could do. It's the kind of thing that someone who names his child X Æ A-Xii would do.

What makes Elon Musk great in other words is not separate from what makes him a hero for many of us in the neurodivergent community. It's deeply tied to it.

That's why I'm glad Time Magazine nominated Musk as their 2021 person of the year. In so doing, they made him the living proof that everything is possible in this world, even if you have a neurological condition like I have, with all the blessings and shortfalls associated with it.

My GF tried getting a job at one of the battery plants around here, and it's basically a sweatshop.
