Especially on big intersections on major US routes. I can understand riding a bike or a motorcycle on less-used roads. But Sly lives in a populated area, and the US Routes really aren't suitable for bikes, in my opinion.

There are some people with autism who have problems with spatial things. I am one of them. I will never set foot on a motorcycle---ever. I rode to work on a bike a few times. I was hit by a car once.

It worse if it's an actual freeway.

Mainstreet of my city is also a highway so it’s 4 lanes. Many people are hit by cars on it every year. People driving here are a**holes who don’t want to wait for others. I’ve seen people honk at people in wheelchairs for not going fast enough through a cross walk, I’ve seen some almost get hit. I’ve almost been hit bunch of times. Getting off my bus there’s a cross walk that’s in parking lot and gas stop signs on both sides and no one ever stops they just speed through it.
Bikes almost get hit all the time cause they ride on the road with the cars and cars don’t look out for them and the turn lane is on other side of bike lane. So some ride on the sidewalks which is illegal. Bikes are impractical for me. Drivers here get super pissed at bikes too often cursing and threatening them. Most drivers hate bike riders from what I’ve heard of them complaining.

Sly, this may be an obvious question but have you told the bus company about your concerns? I know you are only one voice and it's hard to stand up to the big corporations, but I think it's worth a try. Maybe write a letter if you aren't comfortable talking to them in person. Tell them the livelihood of your family depends on it.

The only other solution I can think besides a bicycle (which seems impractical) would be Uber Share, if there are other people going the same direction. Sharing cuts the cost significantly. You don't have to go right to the door of work / home. You can get out of the car earlier than your stop and walk the last little ways to save money.

No one wants you banned, Sly. We're just trying to help you because we care.

I did the survey and write answers but then they emailed me day ago saying sorry your answers were lost.

If other people worked my shift and lived out here I’d have rides. But most don’t as they work 6-8 hour shifts. I work 4 hour shifts. And lately the guy who gave me rides home schedule doesn’t line up as he leaves at 7:30 and I work til 9.

Uber Share wouldn't need to be with people from your exact company. The car will pick up people in your general area going to the general area of your work. You can still walk a bit to save money. It's not ideal, I know. There may not always be other people going your direction, but it's something to consider. Try putting the location in your Uber app sometime and just see if share is an option at that moment in time. I'm wracking my brain to think of alternatives to your bus. Sometimes people post driveshare / rideshare opportunities online if they want to carpool to their job. That's another option you could look at. Again, they don't have to work exactly where you do, but the general area or even somewhere close to a bus stop might help.

What do you mean, the bus company lost your answers? Rewrite them and screenshot them. Phone these people.

Sorry for posting advice if you don't want advice. I'm just looking out for your best interest.

Actually, going back through this thread I can’t find any post where Sly has asked for transportation advice.

He seemingly is using this Haven posting to express his concerns about losing his usual transportation to and from work. Haven is a “special “ support section. It’s odd that your method of support includes calling him a liar and you berating others who are asking you to lighten up. Sly has asked specifically that YOU leave him alone. I know that no one owns a thread and everyone is free to post on any thread, but it’s my understanding from moderator posts that if someone asks another member to not address them, we are supposed to honour that.

He said he’d have to quit his job w/o the bus, so I offered up a few potential solutions that he may not have thought of.

He lied about it taking a few hours to cycle 7 miles. I proved it with facts & physics. He lied about Oregon requiring motorcycle licences for electric bicycles. Kraftie posted the facts on that one.

If he doesn’t want to be called out for lying then he should stop acting so presidential.

There is a big difference between making a mistake and telling a lie. (I so want to ask what acting presidential means, but even if you told me what you meant it’s irrelevant). General etiquette is that if you don’t believe what someone has told you, you ignore it. Especially, on this forum, in Haven. It benefits nothing but your ego to trample in someone when you can ignore them. More so when they’ve told you to leave them alone. It could be construed as bullying.

Call your local politician person (not sure what the terminology would be). Usually there is some sort of ombudsman or something for each town, and they liaise with the government big whigs.

Acting presidential = making things up, exaggerating, or flat out lying like trump.

Sly would have to talk a "Member of the Oregon House of Representatives" from his district.

Or some sort of organization which advocates for mass transit in his area.

If he has time, he should attend meetings and hearings dealing with changes in the transit system.

Years ago when I was in better shape it took me hour or more to ride a bike from my friends house to mine and that was 1/3 the distance my work is down a straight street. I was 17. I’m no where near that shape now so it’d take way longer.
I don’t see how he could prove how long or not how long it’d take me not him to ride w bike any distance.
A healthy in shape person can walk a mile in 20 mins but I can’t nor could other not in shape people.

I'm not in great shape---but I can walk a mile at a moderate pace in about 17 minutes.

But that's besides the point.

That might actually be a good place to meet women---at one of those meetings or hearings where they discuss changes in the transit system. Over there, you have an issue in common---not wanting to discontinue bus routes in certain areas, like your area.

I get exhausted after walking for 40 mins.
My feet hurt etc

There’s no meetings planned. They going start examining the survey responses and what ever they decide will happen in January

Lyft and Uber can be pretty expensive, but it may help with just getting to the bus stop...if it would be a 2 hour walk then it wouldn't be very long at all by vehicle.

It’d be $16 a day to get to bus stop and back. $192 a month. That’s my whole budget. So I couldn’t get food or bus pass. Also Uber drivers hate such trips as they don’t make money so they wouldn’t do it.
If my sister won’t be able to give me ride I’ll just have to quit. Won’t be able to work again if this happens. :(

You'd have to quit your job if you couldn't get a ride? It must be REALLY far from home!

7 miles but it’s not straight. It’d take me few hours one way to rid bike there but I couldn’t make that and if I did I’d be super exhausted and smelly.
I work 4 hours a day, 12 a week.
As is I spend 12 hours on bus a week. If this happens and I had to walk I’d be spending 18 hours to get to work to work 12 hours. Just doesn’t make sense. And if I had to use Uber or taxi I’d be losing money. It’d be $50 a day to go to work by Uber or taxi. I get about $16 a day after everything.
Atleast it won’t happen until Jan 2020, so I’ll get one last year of work.

Oh. 7 miles. Wtf, sly? :? A few hours to ride a bicycle for 7 miles? :? Um, no. That's fake news, sly. 7 miles in 3 hours is 2.33mph. The average human walking speed is 3.1mph. You're tall and likely have a long stride like myself and Could have a much faster than average walking speed, but since you're not in great physical condition I would expect that your walking speed would be approximately average, so let's say 3mph. That means it would take you 2 hours and 20 minutes to WALK to work. There is literally Zero Chance that it would take you 40 minutes LONGER to cycle to work, considering cycling is much more efficient.

The average human bicycling speed is 9.6mph. Let's say your cardio isn't fantastic so yours is, conservatively, 8mph. And maybe there's a couple hills to contend with etc that slow you up some more.. so let's say along your route it drops you down to 7mph. That means from your door to work would take 1 single hour to cycle to work, on a bad weather day it might take a little longer, maybe even up to 1.5h - but surely it would Never Ever take "a few hours," to cycle 7 miles each way. That's a fake news exaggeration, sly.

Being sweaty and smelly Is something to have to deal with. Obviously shower before you go, and then IMO, use some products that help prevent/reduce body odour from sweat. Personally, what I would do (and do do!) is dry off from my shower & then spray some Orange Blossom Water all over my skin (especially groin/armpits etc) and let it dry. (It dries quickly.) it contains Neroli, the essential oil steamed from the blossoms of blood oranges. It's the essential oil used as a base in every fine perfume and cologne for the last couple hundred years. It smells pleasant. It's antibacterial so funky smells don't happen because bacteria can't grow. As an added bonus, it's an anti-anxietal - spritz it in your face and breathe in and feel instantly calmer. It's also safe to spritz on babies & puppies, and is used that way. Instead of buying the very expensive oil, I buy bottles that are premixed in water intended to be drank (it's a Lebanese thing, can be found in Mediterranean markets/delis) for about $2.70CDN and then I pour it into a dollar store spray bottle and it lasts for weeks. I'm also complimented on how it smells and tastes, so it's certainly not just me that likes it.

I would also plan on arriving to work ~15mins early, with a washcloth and bar of soap, perhaps a change of clothes/work uniform in my bag, too. Quick wash up in the staff bathroom, spritz of Orange Blossom Water, change out of my cycling clothes and into my work clothes since it's a clean retail job vs. a dirty construction/warehouse job, and boom, you're feeling and smelling fresh & ready to perform at work. 2 minute costume change at the end of your shift & cycle back home - where you'll get a better night's sleep after having gotten a little extra exercise each day.. blessing in disguise!

If he were in a rural area, and the road didn't have many cars, then I might consider a bike.

On a road like US 1 or whatever, it's quite dangerous to ride a bike. You have to be a decent athlete, have decent reflexes, and be quite focused, to ride on a US route like that. If he's in the middle of the city, it might not be so bad, because cars usually go slower on city streets. But I would say where he works is in a mall which is on a main US Route, where cars routinely go 50-60 mph.
