Colorado schools to promote communism! Developing story
IOW, capitalism is the problem, mostly, and things will never truly move forward for THE ENTIRE PLANET until it is reigned in. People have been trying to do that for more than a hundred years now. And now it's GLARINGLY CLEAR we've run out of time for MANY THINGS SOLELY BECAUSE of this idiotic system that refuses to die.

...Your response to seeing a trans person is to say "grr political! Boycott!" - you couldn't really get a more clear-cut example of transphobia short of physical violence. And... like... you've been a member here for 15 years...If I search the posts you have made for "trans" then it is constant transphobia. I've been here long enough to remember when you were posting the same things about gay people...
This would seem to fit the definition of an intense interest.

A bit like David Duke, who, if you've ever listened to him, seems to know more about Judaism than most Jews do, and who is obsessively anti-Jewish.

Will the collectively owned property (such as farmland and factories) be controlled by the government? If it is, that effectively makes it the government's property rather than the people's property.

So far, Ms. LeGuin's description is the best I have read regarding a fully Communist state.
It is also entirely fictional.

It's generally important to realise that people who think differently to you aren't necessarily stupid or uneducated.
For example, the time one person spends reading about nineteenth century Marxist theory is time that another person spends learning about psychopharmacology, French literature, liberal theory, 20th century history, particle physics, the glandular systems of a sturgeon, economics, and so forth. Ignorance and narrow-mindedness certainly exist, but they aren't the reason people disagree with you - especially if you're pushing a fringe point-of-view that most experts disagree with.
Saying "educate yourself" is not helpful and alienates people from your point of view.

You mean I can't just say "educate yourself" until the other person agrees with me?
You mean I can't just read this book that agrees with me and expect them to not only read it but read it uncritically and believe every word it says without a trace of skepticism?
No insult to Fnord. That actually sounds like a pretty interesting book and later today I'm going to see if they sell it in Audible.
I've just had some bad experiences with other people, when they say something I don't believe them, they say "educate yourself and read this book or read this webpage" and then the webpage turns out to be someone else saying the exact same thing they just said. Then I say to them, "If I didn't believe that claim when you said it, why do you expect me to believe that claim when another dude says it?"

How about offering some material by which a person might "educate" themselves? Something relevant . . . something that is not some YouTube video produced by a paranoid conspiracist or brainwashed propagandist. Something valid and useful, like a university textbook, perhaps.

Offering material is an improvement but my point still applies. Allow me to repeat myself.

To be fair I don't think Fnord was actually saying "if you read The Dispossessed then you'll definitely become a communist". He does, after all, acknowledge that it is a work of fiction, which seems to be an invitation to approach it critically. He seemed to be recommending it as a way that someone who was so interested could gain insight into the differences between the Marxist-Leninist societies we saw in the 20th century and theoretical anarcho-communist utopias.
One criticism I sometimes see of The Dispossessed is that it actually makes the capitalist system seem more attractive than the anarchist one. Le Guin wasn't trying to write about a perfect society, because utopia is impossible, merely to try and illustrate a different society.

You're probably right. The book itself sounds pretty interesting and works of fiction can certainly make good points. I've just had some bad experiences with other people saying "read this and you'll agree with me".
Its totally not Fnord's fault and on reflection, you're probably right that he didn't want me to read it uncritically.

Y'all seem to still be having issues with this topic.
What is wrong with communism? (In brief, please)
