Using RefControl on Firefox will ensure that no referrals of websites you've been on are sent to anyone.

Using CounterSpy will remove all cookies from all your web browsers and some case also trojans on your computer system, and although it's a commercial product it works pretty good in my opinion.

Wiki about CounterSpy

Then you can forget all about preferences in this regard no matter what browser you're using. A big relief for some of us, I guess.

If I understand it correctly, people who moderate sites can see not only the location of the visitors through their IP number,

Kinda... they can usually get a pretty close approximation. They won't be able to get your exact address... but they can usually get your city. It's not always accurate though.

but also which site they were on previously.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure this only applies if you got to the site in question from following a link on the previous site. If you type in or copy/paste the url into the address bar, I don't think it can do that.

Is a proxy you pay for good and will it generate a random IP everytime you use it?

It'll show the IP of the proxy. A good proxy service should connect you through different proxies rather then always using the same one though.

I don't want to pay for a proxy just to have a permanent

It wont be permanent unless you want it to be. There would be nothing preventing you from connecting to sites normally.

I don't want the moderators, because I know especially shopping sites keep detailed track of things like this, to see my obvious aspie behaviour

I highly doubt anyone is going to assume you're an aspie simply because they see your ip connecting to their site all the time. Also, you probably have a dynamic ip unless you specifically pay for a static one. Simply resetting your modem should give you a different ip address.

Try using Hotspot Shield for hiding your IP, also, nothing is ever safe anymore on the net, full of leechers, scammers, shock sites, pornography, viruses, spyware, you name it, it's there. I've never heard some say that the internet is safe as home.

The internet -is- as safe as home (at least for me). Then again I'm 1337 :P

Use Tor. only problem is it's slow but it loads through all the time. Also there's some similar networks that are fast enough for you to route torrents d/l and upload through.

I used AVG AntiVirus Free Product and after 4 months, bought the home version and now use that. I have had no issues with privacy or malware or ad-ware or any other beasties that lurk unprotected on the internet.
