I wish I had a dragon for a pet. I could cancel my Brinks home security if I had a dragon pet!

I have never played dragon quest on any portables but i played from the original dragon warrior for nintendo all the way to part 4 and then 5 on znes for windows and also i think its 7 on playstation 2. my all time favorite is dragon warrior 3 for nintendo because it starts with your character on his or hers 16th birthday and i started playing it on my 16th birthday! I wonder why they changed the name from warrior to quest. At your age i think its really cool that you have gotten into it! If your into older, simpler games i suggest you try the previous versions!

I played all the Dragon Warriors, too for the NES. Dragon Warrior 4 is my all time favorite RPG game. It amazed me that they could pack so much into an 8 bit sustem. They called it Dragon Warrior because a movie owned the Dragon Quest name in the US but now Nintendo renamed the Dragon Warriors to Dragon Quest when they ported them to the ds.
The NES games have much more replay value than the later ones.

YA! I was so shocked about 4 being so long too! my favorite thing to do was at the end of the game, I would try to beat the last boss using less characters each time. I managed to do with 3 but thats it. Have you played dragon quest swords for wii? I heard it sucks, but the person who told me isn't into rpgs. I don't have a wii but my brother does and was thinking of getting it for him. Other than my brother, I have met only one person who really liked the series. Its nice to know such a fine piece of art can be liked by other people! Is the one on DS have any internet play? I've always wished it would go online. I think it would be really cool to have your team of monsters and join with other players with theirs and just beat bad guys. Another thing i always liked was some characters would do funny things like "Talloon told a joke and slime a is laughing uncontrollably"!

I think a lot of younger non-geeky people were using the NES when the Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy seriess came out. They didn't realize that RPG games are really cool and they ought to try them. I grabbed them up right away because I'd had played Adventure and Rogue, now called Nethack, on the computer. Side thing about Nethack. They have a Charm Monster spell so I adopted monsters all the time.
I never tried DQ Swords but I tried DQ Monsters. It was really boring. I think they made it as their version of Pokemon.
Dragon Warrior IV was ported over to the DS. The pictures are prettier. Remember the casino? Dragon Quest V has three casinos and some other games. It's full of stuff. It also has a feature where you can collect knick-knacks from other players but I haven't tried it yet. Dragon Warrior IV for the ds also has a feature where you can put other players into a town that you build.

You're in for a treat. What Masuna said about Taloon, he's a lot of fun. In the middle of a fight, he may ignore orders and just say, "All right everybody. Calm down." This either makes the monsters get more mad or they disappear. He does other funny things, too, during battle. All the characters have their own theme music so whoever is leading gets their theme played. Taloon's music is comical and fits him.

Ditto here, too. I need to finish going through the bonus dungeons on the GBC remix.
I'd love to check out the new remixes for DS, but I kind of want to go through the originals first (courtesy of fan translations running on my Wii )
That and I don't have the money for them yet =/

I have Dragon Quest Swords. I only played it a little because I do not have a Wii (I had to use my housemate's console when I wanted to play).
What little I could see was very fun.
I guess liking it depends on what your expectations are. This is a rail game, like those zombie shooters at arcades. There are different paths you can follow in each stage, but they are still on predefined routes.
Monsters appear and attack you (the screen). You have to attack them with your sword, using regular attacks or special techniques. A partner can cast spells to help you.
If you are expecting an RPG then you won't find it here. If you are bitter after that you may end up not liking it.
Masuna, your brother should like it, it really is fun.
Becky, I love DQM! From the first one, controlling a young Terry, getting all those monsters (I love collecting things), and listening to classic DQ music with new twists on classic DQ scenes! What's not to love, LOL. I was hooked with the series. I just wish I'd had money to get the Caravan Heart DQM game when it came out, because now it is way harder to get it.
And back to Dragon Quest V! I tried so long to get a great dragon to join my team (it did after a long time). He even shares my name (a way to pronounce it, at least), "Caesar", or Shi~za~ (my name is César, and is pronounced Sesaru by Japanese).
I take it you understand Japanese, but I just thought I'd throw this out there, that a fan translation (into English) came out for Caravan Heart not too long ago.
I tried it a little bit, but I'm too busy with other games at the moment.
I never even did beat the first Monsters game

Back in the day I didn't know how (relatively) easy it was to import games (thanks, Play-Asia, LOL). I played the Japanese version using an emulator. But I could only finish the normal story, and had no time to continue with the extra stuff (Caravan Heart had a whole lot of extra stuff after "the end").
I would have tried the translation, but I have no PC (this is at work), so I can't play it.
I did buy two Japanese guide books for CH. They have some great illustrations and very useful data.
I bought a flash cart so I could play Mother 3...it's come in pretty handy.
