how come sometimes I see my username up there and sometimes not? is there a rule for this?

It just guestimates from your activity. It can't actually tell if you are on or off, because the server is stateless.

cookies break statelessness, but are of little use here, because that doesn’t mean you are active.

I don't get it

the internet is meant to be stateless. That means one request is not related to another. Therefore a server just sees a number of independent requests. I can only guess who they are related. It knows recently that you are visiting and you are authenticated via the session info. Therefore it can guess from where you are browsing that you are visiting the section for a while. However it doesn’t really know how long you will be sticking around. You might not even load the page before you move on.

well technically if you are viewing them whilst logged on they can't be that dead

but yes they are guesses that have to expire at some point.

if i was doing it wouldn't count brief activity, but there is various ways you could do it.

Presumably, it's guessing based on users who have looked at something in this forum in past X minutes. So, why, when I've just pulled up the index to the forum, am I not on that list of users who looked at the forum in the past X minutes?

It only knows you have requested a page. 'looking' is a state in-between requests.

Have you enabled that you online status is visible?

Notice I'm NOT the person who posted earlier. I'm not trying to solve a problem or issue. I'm asking a question in response to your previous posts in this thread. And notice the original poster sometimes sees his/her name, and sometimes doesn't. So, not only is your question not an answer. It's not relevant to the discussion. Since, presumably, whichever setting the original poster has, he/she keeps it that way.

I am programmer who has created such session/user management before, if someone wants an answer and asked me nicely I bother to answer it. But not you.
