Here is an excerpt from a IM conversation I had(Schwartzmacht is MY handle BTW):

Schwartzmacht (6/7/2009 10:44:40 AM): tell me, are you not an ombrophile?
ViolaPlayer1987 (6/7/2009 10:45:13 AM): a what?
Schwartzmacht (6/7/2009 10:45:22 AM): ombros==rain
Schwartzmacht (6/7/2009 10:45:32 AM): ;)
ViolaPlayer1987 (6/7/2009 10:45:49 AM): ombros does not equal rain
ViolaPlayer1987 (6/7/2009 10:46:01 AM): ombro does
Schwartzmacht (6/7/2009 10:46:30 AM): ombro is a prefix derived from the greek noun ombros
ViolaPlayer1987 (6/7/2009 10:46:45 AM): Is this how you are on dates?
Schwartzmacht (6/7/2009 10:46:49 AM): no
ViolaPlayer1987 (6/7/2009 10:47:01 AM): because its really a turn off and quite annoying
Schwartzmacht (6/7/2009 10:47:23 AM): are you saying that Im being too pedantic?
ViolaPlayer1987 (6/7/2009 10:47:53 AM): I am saying you are really weird and not my type
Schwartzmacht (6/7/2009 10:48:02 AM): hrm
ViolaPlayer1987 (6/7/2009 10:48:18 AM): don't Hrm at me
Schwartzmacht (6/7/2009 10:48:45 AM): WTF did I say that got you offended?
ViolaPlayer1987 (6/7/2009 10:48:56 AM): I am gonna go

Good Grief! I dont understand why women get like this when you get picky about words :x . I did NOT mean to be condescending or to correct her but it seems women actively HATE men who are pedantic. Why is this so? Any thoughts??

Because, they don't like being corrected or someone showing off their knowledge, I don't see anything wrong with what you said really but that'll be because I am also a male.

Based on what I witnessed and heard (From women) the most famous turn-offs to women:

- Shyness or Social awkwardness (usually project lack of confidence)
- The no experience in relationships
-Being needy or desperate
- Ugly face

and of course, besides the thousands of things that they don't even admit them to themselves.

Whenever I think of a pedantic guy who can't stand women because of a woman, I think of......Professor Higgins!! :D

Sounds about right....Buuuuuuuuuuuuuut there actually ARE women who arent bothered by shyness because they are that way themselves. Another thing that really brings out the worst in women is anything that makes them feel self-conscious which might be the case in the conversation that I present in this thread.

hahahaah , that was a cool convo.

She rocks. At least she's so honest.

And yea, behaving like a talking dictionary might be a turn-off to anyone.

f**k this girl. she didn't wanna talk to you in the first place. anyways like I've been saying, there is a world of women out there that likes aspie guys and other types of guys, the problem is it that they are unattractive.

Aspie guys problem is that we have trouble getting attractive girls. We only want attractive girls. i mean come on, anyone can get a gf, its just that not everyone can get the one they want.So do we act different? hell naw, f**k those girls, they aint s**t.
Also the girl is obviously insecure. But aspie guys like any guy would date an insecure girl if she looks good. all men care about are looks and its true.
all i care about is looks and an accepting personality. all the rest of that garbage i dont care. i dont care if shes insecure, self conscious or whatever. she's a human being and people have problems. men dont reject women because of natural problems such as insecurity and so forth, because it doesnt matter, we are all people, and we are all self conscious

Based on what I saw, the shyest girls dislike shy guys, usually the socially straightforward women have more tolerance than them regarding shyness or social awkwardness.

Aside from XKCD, a good rule of thumb I learned is that a feeling of importance is one of the few things the people in this world are never given and constantly strive for.

When Schwartzmacht said "tell me, are you not an ombrophile? " they were probably striving for you to say something like, "wow, you know greek?" That's so impressive, and thus, make them feel important.

Or you can go quasi brain-ninja on them, and say "that's so strange, I only date people who speak greek... badly - <insert greek pun>". :)

Use your new skill wisely.

First off, I didn't think you were either pedantic or weird. It was interesting, really.

Second, although we are only seeing a portion of what I assume was a much longer conversation, I did notice that she never actually said you were being pedantic, you did. It wasn't an appearance of pedantry that turned her off, she just apparently thought it was odd that you knew the etymology of the word and that was outside of her comfort zone. It's usually the breeching of an individual's comfort zone that turns them off, whether male or female. (I'm not saying I understand why that was outside of her comfort zone, mind you. :) )

Regards,

Patricia

Not all women have a problem with this - the quickest way for me to turn my wife on is to get pedantic, especially when it's about a topic she either knows nothing about or doesn't know well. (My cohusband can turn her on by discussing the finer points of cooking, but then, he's a chef).

Just not a connection between her and you, I suppose...
