I discovered that there are many heavy metal fans here in Wrong Planet. I was wondering which heavy metal genre was the favourite among WP users. I know that some bands fit in more than one classification so there is a certain overlap between them.

I will post some examples of bands of each style so you can choose more accurately (some that I know). (?) means I don't know for sure:

- New Wave of British Heavy Metal: Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Saxon, Venon, Def Leppard, Girlschool...

-Trash Metal: Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Exodus...

- Power Metal: Helloween, Blind Guardian, Angra, Edguy, Manowar, Hammerfall, Gamma Ray, Iced Eath, Sonata Artica...

- Progressive Metal: Queensryche, Dream Theater, Fates Warning...

- Gothic Metal: Lacuna Coil, Paradise Lost, Tristania...

- Industrial Metal: Nine Inch Nails,(?) Godflesh, Static-X, Ministry...

- Death Metal: Morbid Angel, Death, Decide...

- Black Metal: Venon, Mercyful Fate, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost... (?)

- Glam Metal: Twisted Sister, W.A.S.P., Motley Crue...

- Neo-Classical Metal: Yngwie J. Malmsteen...

- Nu-Metal: Korn, Linkin Park, Slipknot and Mudvayne...

- New Wave of American Heavy Metal (NWOAHM): Lamb of God, Machine Head, Mastodon, Otep, System of a Down...

- Speed Metal: (?) Annihilator, Accept, Angel Dust,

- Alternative Metal: Tool, System of a Down, Deftones...

- Extreme Metal: Sepultura...

- Symphonic Metal: Nightwish, Therion...

-Rap Metal: Rage Against the Machine...

- Groove Metal: Pantera, White Zombie...

- Classical Metal: Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Bon Jovi, Dio, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Rainbow, Scorpions...

King Diamond/Mercyful Fate have been my favorite bands for many years. They're the only well known black metal that doesn't sound similar to death metal.

King Diamond is the vocalist of both bands of course.

That is a hard one. I like Scorpions, Mötley Crüe, Rammstein, etc.

It is interesting to note, that not one option has received more than one votes so far.

On of my obsessions is progressive rock/metal. I haven't found a favorite band. May I please offer a correction to your list? Tool is considered to be progressive metal now. I agree though that in the beginning, they were alternative metal. Other than that, you truly know your metal. Thanks for the survey!

Progressive Metal - King Diamond (?), Dream Theater, Mastodon, Tool
Death Metal - Death, Children of Bodom
Black Metal - Mercyful Fate, King Diamond
Metalcore - All That Remains, Lamb of God (?)
New Wave of American Heavy Metal (NWOAHM) - All that Remains, Lamb of God, Mastodon, Machine Head

I like brutal or technical death metal. Deeds of Flesh, Decrepit Birth, Devourment, Dying Fetus, Hate Eternal, Nile, and Cannibal Corpse.

Old school metal? It's traditional heavy metal. Like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and the like.

I personally am an obsessive metalhead, and my favorite genre is black metal. My favorite band is Negura Bunget, which is Romanian atmospheric black metal. It's wonderful, all of the lyrics are about nature and forests and such. It's oddly beautiful music. My other favorite band is Moonsorrow, which is viking/folky black metal from Finland. They're fantastic.

I'm also really into melodeath (Insomnium being my favorite melodeath band) and doom (Swallow the Sun, Hanging Garden).

I like Death/Black metal and Grindcore (can Grind even be considered metal since it's so punk influenced? It's more of a hybrid of Hardcore Punk and Death Metal). I do listen to Thrash Metal and a little bit of traditional Heavy Metal though, but most metal I listen to is more extreme. I listen to pretty much any sub-genre of Death Metal, although I like Melodic Death a bit more than Brutal Death.

I thought old school metal is music like "Black Sabbath" since it's from the 70s.

I had never heard of such a band. Since it's from Finland, I had to look it up right away, it's now playing on my Spotify.

How about another Finnish band, Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus?
