Yeah, your doctor is clueless. It's the other way around. You can't have a below-normal (i.e., below 70) IQ for AS. It's a silly arbitrary criterion, but that's the way it is. At least your doctor showed that he didn't know much in a fairly obvious way; now you know to find somebody who does know something.
VIQ/PIQ gap isn't a diagnostic criterion either. It is for NVLD (non-verbal learning disability) but not for AS. Some of us don't have that gap and are pretty obviously autistic.
Take a lesson, folks: This is why you need to see an actual specialist.
