I was told something odd during a dr's appt. I mentioned Asperger's and he said that I definitely could not have Asperger's because my IQ is fairly normal. :? I always thought your IQ had nothing or very little to do with it.

Remember that there's a difference between a doctor and a psychologist.
And what does he know about your IQ?

You can only be diagnosed with AS if you have a 'normal' (or higher) IQ.

It's just a definition someone came up with, but it's in the two most important and international sets of criteria of AS that they use in America/English-speaking countries and in other countries/European countries. Any psychologist and psychiatrist should know about that criterion if at least they do know a little about Asperger's and classical autism and how they are currently understood in 2009.

When I mentioned asperger's to the therapist I was seeing, she tried to use it as "proof" that I must be smart because people with asperger's are "always" smart, even though it's not actually that people with asperger's are "always smart" but just can't be mentally ret*d.. even though she wasn't particularly sure I had it.. I wasn't seeing her very long. She was very expensive and seeing her was very stressful and didn't make much sense. (if that whole thing actually made sense to you, you must be a genius, 'cause it's all nonsense.)

I think the IQ of above 110/ 120 has been established by researchers remember the subjects Hans Aspergers tested on we all the one whom were aspie had above average intellect its one of those things that is set in stone after talking to many aspies I think it is a general trend to and is very hard to refute as most with AS do have above average intelligence

For yo though its whether you meet the DSM I am lucky when I enquired for diagnosis as I took my dyslexia, dysphraxia report which had my IQ and the perticles on but if not you can always request a different doctor its one of your rights

Normal IQ doesn't mean you can't have AS. Only if your IQ is below 70 you can't have AS. That is at least what the official criteria (DSM-IV and ICD-10) say. Research may or may not have shown that Aspies generally have high IQs, but as long as the criteria aren't changed , you can still have an AS diagnosis if you don't have a high IQ.

IQ has nothing to do with an aspergers diagnosis.

Seems like a bad therapist. The assumption that all people with AS are the same (in some way) is a pervasive problem and also annoying. Not all NT's are the same, why is this assumption made about people with AS and others on the spectrum.

My son is very bright but his low verbal scores lower his IQ out to @ average. You wouldn't think so to hear his teachers. They all think he is extremely intelligent even if he struggles in math. Most of his academic problems stem from problems with focus. I've heard only AS if no speech delay and also heard about level of IQ being the deciding factor. So, if you have one adult with Asperger's and one adult with HFA, how are they different?

wow. you're doctor is so off the mark and really shouldn't be saying anything if he's going to be wrong about what he does say. my IQ is way above average and there's no doubt that i have AS.

Some researchers and clinicians think that people with Autism/Asperger usually have big discrepancies between the several subscales of IQ (for example, between PIQ and VIQ).

Perhaps was this that your doctor was talking?

Yeah, your doctor is clueless. It's the other way around. You can't have a below-normal (i.e., below 70) IQ for AS. It's a silly arbitrary criterion, but that's the way it is. At least your doctor showed that he didn't know much in a fairly obvious way; now you know to find somebody who does know something.

VIQ/PIQ gap isn't a diagnostic criterion either. It is for NVLD (non-verbal learning disability) but not for AS. Some of us don't have that gap and are pretty obviously autistic.

Take a lesson, folks: This is why you need to see an actual specialist.
