Well Executive Dysfunction can be a component of both. The thing about ADD with me is speed (when I tried it in my youth) makes me sleepy. Which is why they use Ritalin to medicate a hyperactive child.
What I don't get is why they gave me ritalin as a child. I wasn't even hyper (was an "ADD" child).

It doesn't always have the effect of making you sleepy-- in most people it has the opposite effect. That's why such drugs are called "stimulants" or "speed." It can be fairly neutral for me. When I first got onto adderall, I thought it would wake me up, and more than once I missed my morning classes because I mistakenly assumed that taking an amphetamine along with a cup of coffee would wake me up. Then I'd fall back asleep for four hours. I don't notice it ever making me sleepy, though. It just helps me focus. Sometimes that kinda helps with sleep 'cause my brain isn't all over, although I don't really have the hyperactivity part, but trouble focusing may be part of my problem with sleep-- that my mind drifts and I can't do whatever it is that normal people do when they go to sleep.

I remember adderall. I was on edge all the time, and I overfocused even more on certain subjects. I also remember what my body was like when I stopped taking it.
I never worked too well with meds.
Welcome askme
i hear fish oils or flax seed oils help with concentration. Eye Q is the best supplement ive found for this.
i think my brothers ADD as hes a daydreamer but its hard to diagnose here in the UK.

Its used to increase concentration so can help with non hyper as well as hyper kids.

Makes sense to me. See the article below.
Inattentive ADHD Explained
Normally in the brain the prefrontal cortex will speed up activity when there is work to concentrate on. But with this type of inattentive ADHD the prefrontal cortex actually slows down when placed under a work load, like reading or doing homework.
This part of the brain looks normal when "at rest," but actually looks like it is starting to fall asleep when asked to "go to work." This makes it very hard to pay attention to school work, get homework done, listen to the teacher, clean your room, and so on.
We have actually observed this hundreds of times with subjects on an EEG. When at rest, the brainwave activity is pretty normal. But once the subject is asked to read, or to do a math worksheet, the subject's brainwave activity begins to look like the subject is falling asleep. And often times they do fall asleep! This sure makes school hard for these students!

If you aren't taken in by the miracle medications then its a very good site for explaining AD(H)D. That is all forms and laypeople should be able to understand. Helped me "diagnose" my brother.

mmmph i also find that meds dont work for me either
Anti depressants = depression
anti psychotics = loosing my mind and violence
anti fungal = i want to die
anti biotics = i want to die
tranx = hyper
ive often wondered if im ADHD in some way or another as well. My case is complicated by dyslexia though.

I am very much an AS/ADD person...and I got it from my folks too.
I like stimulant meds...they help drown out all the excess static that totally freezes me up...but they can make me totally overfocus on the wrong things.
Adderall has been a useful tool...I really want to get another script...
Without it....doing all the things I need to do is screamingly frustrating....every little thing is just torture...
I may seem cranky when taking Adderall...but really, I am just as cranky if not moreso without...
I really really need to get back into the routine of taking my Omegas again....I am always better when I am taking them...

This is my life in a nutshell, but meds help. My son has the same problem. It was ironic in high school math when I really needed to pay attention I could barely keep my eyes open. When class was over I was fine. I have been wondering for years why I had this problem. No wonder I can't accomplish anything.

omg! I'm exactly the same! I organize things and hate seeing things in disarray but lack the attention span to keep them organized

Ha! I'm a silly willy nilly old bear.
ADHD Inattentive Type
ADHD : Just Like Winnie the Pooh
Winnie the Pooh is the classic picture of Inattentive ADHD. Although Pooh is very lovable, loyal, and kind, he is also inattentive, sluggish, slow-moving, unmotivated. He is a classic daydreamer with brain fog. In other works we have called this "Space Cadet" style ADHD.
