Write down how you're feeling. That helps me a lot.

I concur with that. Some other ideas:

*Write down/think about good times you've had, when you were at your happiest.

*Listen to some quiet instrumental music. I listen to Beethoven, Bach, Mahler, Ives, Kraftwerk, Vangelis and Brian Eno when I'm depressed.

*Dispute your emotional state using logic and reason. Depression is neither logical nor rational.

*Take a walk outside.

*Call a friend.

*Call a hotline if things get really bad and you don't want to call a friend.

*If you believe in God, talk to God and ask why you're feeling this way.

*Stay in your funk. Accept it. Don't fight it but don't deny it. Listen to it. You might find some answers that may surprise you.

I've given a bunch of ideas because different methods work at different times.
I hope this helps. May God be between you and harm in all the dark places you must walk.

I'm sorry to hear that Kev :(
Is there any specific cause? Or have you just generally not been having an easy time of it?

Well, I'll nitpick a bit of your vocab first. :) "Ideal" is a condition that when everything is perfect, so there shouldn't be several good "ideals"... It should have been "ideas".

Your descprition online is so vauge that no one can really give you any specific advices. When I saw this earlier, I didn't know how to approach your question at all. wandrew and Sorce tackeld them well I must say.

The state of depression is obviously not normal but it is an reaction from the adversity in one's life. You may think yourself to be awful and unworthy, and hence you think you don't deserve happiness. You should take time and try to divert your mind off your feelings, it should help you to decide your next step.

Get more excercise and eat better. That's good advice for anyone, but it's helping me through my depression. Which I've only just realized I had.

Every day I've been getting more and more tired. I've tried to fix so many different things, but almost all have failed. I'm a typical AS person who has gone undiagnosed for 24 years. Just this weekend I realized I haven't been out of my house on a weekend in around 6 years. For that length of time I've thought that everything was 'ok'. It's not ok.

So what teh feck to do about it? I've changed my diet completely. I know this is hard. Fat people don't really want to be fat, and while I'm not particularly fat, medically I'm obese. And it's tough to change. When it comes to body strength, most women are stronger than I am :P I try to get more excercise. It works. I feel better. Why did I ignore the whole 'exercise is good for you' truth for my whole life? I dunno. I'm stupid in ways like that. That is all I have to say really. There's probably a ton of other things wrong with me too.

First of all I have always said Ideals not Ideal need to read more carefully but that is okay.

I have been in and out of the states of depression for 20 plus years of My Life. I have always had a hard time taking mind off My feelings, but I will try to do that as much as I can. Thanks!!

Tolian

I do need to get more excercise and eat better even quit smoking too. I went undiagnosed 41 years with depression Aspergers and few other things as well. I know how it feels not to leave the house for many more days than not. I glad I don't have a weight problem though I should tone up a bit for sure. I hope for the best for You and hope You in the future as well.

In this week's TIME Magazine on Page 58 there is an article about a researcher who took Cognitive & Behavioral therapy for depression to a difference level and found it worked much better. It consists of not analyzing ot righting the thoughts, but letting them drift by and then impartially identifying them. That is, "I'm having thoughts about being depressed." He thinks you can learn to detach yourself from the depression by this means. His first princple (misreported by TIME as "Happiness is not normal --- boo, hiss, TIME Magazine" is the observation that "People Suffer."

If this sounds a lot like Buddhism, it may be. It sure sounds a lot like Buddhism practice and theory. But it worked for him. It may work for you.

Just my $0.02

kevv729 -

So sorry to hear you're depressed at the moment, my friend.
You are strong. It will pass.

The article from Time magazine mentioned by greybadger is here.
It's about a type of therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
You can read more about it here.

This is one version of a new wave of very effective psychotherapies called
"mindfulness based".
The mindfulness referred to is a very simple, easy form of meditation.
Usually, you learn in a group, one session a week for eight weeks,
plus a few minutes a day on your own. As therapies go, they are cheap.

The version known as "Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy" (MBCT)
has proved especially useful in helping people overcome recurrent depression.
There is a useful article about how it works here,
where you can also read how MBCT reduced the rate of relapse in those with
three episodes of depression or more, compared with the previous standard
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, from 78% to 36%.

All these effective new therapies stem from the work of Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn
at UMass Medical School, whose "Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction" (MBSR)
program (here) has helped people deal successfully with stress of all kinds
for more than twenty years, and is now taught worldwide.

You can learn it yourself for a handful of bucks with the book and CDs
"Full Catastrophe Living" by Jon Kabat-Zinn, at Amazon here.

By the way, the meditation involved is nothing at all do with religion or spirituality,
although it was developed from a mental tool used by Buddhists. But if you are a
praying sort of person, you will find it improves your prayer power greatly.

I too suffered decades of deepest depression, and kicking it, and getting depressed again
without warning. Meditation has helped me overcome it pretty much completely.
I haven't done one of these nifty new courses, but I know a young person who bought
the book and audio and stepped right out from years of sadness and lack of direction.
It was amazing. Two years on, she's happy with her life at last.

hello kev,

I'm sorry you're tired and depressed. Did you go to the mall? How was it? What did you get?

Depression is a dark and terrible thing and I hate to think of you having to contend with it.

Can you describe more how you feel? You said that you're "tired" too. what do you mean by "tired?" Do you mean "sleepy" or "weary" or something else?

Please feel free to email me anytime about anything. Keep talking to us, please!

Yeah made to to the Mall spent 3 hours there or so and it was not to bad meant a friend in a store a talked to her, she manages a store at the Mall and she was busy. I bought some DVDs one is the Passion of the Christ, and Star Wars III, even the Abyss.

I have been contending with depression for 20 plus years of My Life. My feelings are tired and depressed kind of hard to describe at least for Me. Tired not really sleepy or even weary either, more like emotional tiredness than a physical tiredness I guess.

Thanks to all that have posted or pm Me.

Again Thanks
