I was in a home a few days ago working on some home theater gear, and the homeowners had scented candles everywhere! What is the appeal of these things? Their smell is similar to that of burnt diesel fuel on top of some synthetic scent that hardly resembles what it supposed to be. When I walked into this person's house to work on their equipment, I naturally started looking for a piece of electronic equipment that is burning up. After doing some tuning up of their equipment, I mentioned to the homeowner that I could smell something plastic - like burning, but I inspected all the AV equipment, but everything seems to be okay, but that they might want to check some of the other appliances in their home to make sure there isn't a problem. She came back and said "Oh, I've got some candles burning in the kitchen and front room" ....oops! Now, tell me exactly WHY would someone want their home smelling like burnt petroleum products?!?!?!

I LOVE scented candles, they are wonderful. They are very relaxing for me.

Strong, artificial scents really set me off.

The store I hate more than any other, bar none, is Lush. I cannot walk within 5 m of one of their stores without becoming nauseated.

What the hell is wrong with scented candles, they are an important part of a relaxing bubble bath

Some of us with AS have heightened senses. Some can even pick out individual ingredients that are being cooked in a dish just by smell. Those of us with heightened noses can smell the underlying petrol and wax over the scent. For us, these scented monstrosities are a curse visited upon us by netherworld demons of yore (to put it mildly) :). They also make the atmosphere seem thick and difficult to breathe.

I'm convinced that those who like them just cannot smell what they are really breathing under that scent.

What is equally just as bad as scented candles is going to a theatre, concert or other public gathering where every woman has doused herself in some kind of perfume. It's like toxic chemical warfare...!

oh good god I hate scented candles/air fresheners. My mom still resents that I can't bear to have those types of candles and what not around the house. As for going into one of those candle stores I've only done it once and it was more than enough. I started gagging, coughing, and swearing under my breath and had to leave.

Oddly enough though cologne and perfume don't bother me unless its cheap trash.

Scented candles are bad, but scented cat litter is far, far worse. I much prefer unscented litter, though it's somewhat harder to find, and occasionally I accidentally buy stuff with a scent in it. Ugh.

I like candles! A lot. I'm very picky about which ones I like though. I don't like the ones that smell like food, because I'm afraid I might end up eating them. Some of them smell really delicious! Oh and I love the candle ad in this page: "stronger scents at lower prices"! Sure, I'm sure people reading this thread will jump at the opportunity to buy some of that.

New Agers especially love scented candles. There used to be a New Age bookstore here in town with an EXTENSIVE candle selection, people use them for altars, and most of them were scented. If you want love, burn this candle. If you want success, this one. If you want happiness, this one. They smell good in the rack, but to actually LIGHT them is something else entirely. And people never realized that it's all petroleum wax with a synthetic scent. It is so stupid. And then there's incense, gag. Incense is EVIL. Some of the authentic incense from India is ok, but most of the stuff on the market is just pressed sawdust and chemicals. I hate any and all of those artificial smells. Why does your house have to smell like a chemical? Why does a "refined" woman splash herself with toxic waste that happens to smell good? What is it with smell? Soap and water, people, that's all you need, and to shave underarm hair. I also think makeup is dumb too. It looks like warpaint! What are you, an Indian warrior? Nature. It's far out.

If the bathroom starts smelling or my bedroom, I use a scented candle and I open the window.

I don't mind scented candles, but I HATE incense and moreso, perfumes and aftershaves. They seem to make it hard for me to breathe, and can make me sneeze lots. Yet, as a teen, during my hippy phase, I used to burn a lot of incense myelf.
But, I am very sensitive to smells of all kinds. Maybe it just increased as i got older.

I hate incense too, it stunk and my ex liked using it. But it doesn't do any effect on me. It's the smell I don't like.

Most synthetic scents give me headaches. Some are better, some are worse.
I LOVE natural scents though. I have a dried lavender pouch which I love to smell when I'm relaxing.
