Backwards Compatibility

Due to the availability of an extensive line-up of PS3™ system titles, the 120GB PS3™ system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, but does maintain backwards compatibility for some original PlayStation® titles.

Basically what the PSOne did the the PSX? With a few extra features.

To me, the PS1 = the small light version of PSX. The PSX is the original, crash a lot system, with a later revision that fixes it Time to shut up now ...

I just got the PS3 remake (slim) with a 250 gB hard drive. Haven't bought a system in years, don't know that I'll use all that space anytime soon but I still figured I'd rather buy right the first time than buy twice or have to constantly erase things.

And, most important...


It's only $300 (US), the previous versions were $400-$500 depending on how large a hard drive you wanted (initially the more expensive model had ps2 compatibility and more usb ports as well, but updates have since killed the ps2 compatibility on all ps3 systems). However Linux cannot be installed on the slim, only on older models.

The new and the old ps3 model in performance wise doesn't seem to be any different and seems roughly the same.
The only difference about it i can think of is the fact that the new ps3 slim version is more of an updated and more bug fixed version of the old ps3 model and more storage to store your games.

I was gutted that they decided not to put the backwards compacity because I have alot of ps2 games that I want to play on the new one. However the networking as I heard is free and you can browse the internet which i wish they should of done on the xbox 360.

It's definitely worth buying but repairing the playstation itself, you have to pay quite alot of money for it.

Looks great so far, but I'm surprised that they managed to compact all that into something slightly smaller. Do they have a VGA cable so I can plug it into my computer monitor like what I do with the 360? Now that the price has gone down, I'm considering getting one of these.

I plan to buy it soon. I just need a paycheck first. No job yet though.

If you have alot of PS2 games just keep your PS2 around.

It looks awesome.

The new slim PS3's looks nice....but I was really disappointed to see that they removed the "OtherOS" function.

Open Source is kind of a special interest to me and just the knowledge that I won't be able to fiddle around with it makes me cringe.

I wish they could have kept OtherOS and PS2-compability...then it would have been a very nice machine.

By the way, does anyone know a way to set it back to regular RCA if you had it on an HDMI prior? I plug it in to my TV now and I can't get audio or visual - figure that I have to go back to my buddies house most likely, plug the HDMI back in, disable HDMI, but I'm really surprised there isn't an easier way about it.

The older PS3s are superior for backwards compatibility when used with HDMI since it plays the discs in upscaled HD.

I think that the specs of the console are decent. However I think the PS3 looks ugly. But you don't get a console to look at. Im going to stick to the good ol PC for gaming I think.

Anyone want to play online? I'm legionsdad.

I liked the original PS3 design better. It's quite timeless and majestetic, like the Dodge Ram.
