Doing a "Newswatch" of current events pertaining to a particular theme was a critical project in 8th grade social studies and 10th grade law class. I do not remember exactly what the topic of interest was for 8th grade, but for 10th grade, I had to keep on top of the abortion law debate. I remember it was really pertinent at the time, since Bush was adding Supreme Court justices like crazy, and, as you know, Supreme Court justice nominees never talk about their political views. We essentially had to summarize the news article in a paragraph, and then give analysis/commentary that looked at the legal implications of the article: in other words, what are the constitutional implications, does this contradict a Supreme Court precedent, etc. This was back when I followed politics, so I must say I enjoyed the project.
