I am 24 years old and I have never ever had the need of being able to drive a car or owning a car. This is the reason I never bothered taking classes or getting a license.

College is the place I go the most to and my home is close enough that walking to college is possible, nevertheless it is healthier and MY WALKING SPEED IS CONSTANT. I think that with traffic and stuff I would take longer to get in there by car.

There are times in which I have to go to places that are far away. But there is public transportation and cabs and stuff... In fact, I see my father getting stressed out with the whole driving thing and then losing minutes trying to find a parking spot. The spot is so far away from the target location that you have to walk any way... It would have been much easier by taking a transport that does not need parking...

It depends on where you live. My life would be impossible without a car. Very little public transport. Taxi's very expensive. Town many miles away. Often lots of grocery shopping to carry. Sometimes even building supplies.

While you may not need a driving licence at the moment you could need it for a job or sometime in the future as the circumstances of your life change. I'd strongly recommend passing your driving test if you can afford to do so - it leaves your options open for the future.

I don't need a car, but I like not having to walk for an hour to get to work, and also being able to carry more than two bags back from the supermarket! :)

Walking for one hour is awesome for me, since a lot of people despise such thing, it is a warranted whole hour of being able to think and reflexionate with myself and being alone.

I drive 12 miles to work, 12 more back 5 times a week..

I go skiing, that's 50 miles out all the time..

Yeah, pretty sure I need my car.

What a coincidence! I just posted in another thread asking whether you have a license.

No, I don't have a license, and have never had, nor wanted, a car. I could never have afforded one anyway. I come from a place with excellent public transit, and I've moved to a place where my wife is the driver. She drives me to work and home again, and anywhere else I need to go. Where she comes from, a car was essential, and she started it at the earliest opportunity.

I'm sorry to repeat myself in multiple threads, but since it's relevant to the question: I am terrified to drive. I don't think I could concentrate on all the things one needs to be aware of while on the road with other cars doing 70 MPH. My worst fear is not to be in an accident, or to die in one, but to live through one, all mangled up. So no driving for me, ever.

I'm 51.

If you live near a metropolitan area and you have lots of connections(parents, friends, relatives to drive you), then you don't need to drive. You can take public transportation and if your house or destination is kind of inconvenient, then your "connections" can drive you from the train station for example but the driving will never be too far so they wouldn't mind.

I never understand why people spend so much time trying to find a good parking spot. All that time wasted, you could've been walking around inside the store already (or wherever you're going).

I always take the first spot I find, usually at the back end of the parking lot, where there's very little traffic, and less cars for me to accidentally bump into.

...not like I'm going to remember where the heck I parked when I leave anyway :x

These are much the same reasons I need a car. Even when I lived where there was better public transportation, the few times I used it I found it somewhat intolerable -- the proximity of others, feeling vulnerable and out of control. I like to drive myself. Driving is, for me, much more conducive to my love of privacy and solitude. There are a lot of inputs to manage, but they're more mechanistic and tolerable to me than dealing with lots of people in close proximity.

I was nervous learning to drive, and had trouble with it for a few years, but now I'm very comfortable driving, even in heavy traffic, and I'd hate to give it up. I do still have trouble driving in strange places, following maps to learn my way around. But I like to drive.

My biggest obstacle is dealing with keeping a car maintained. Remembering to check fluids and tires and such. Luckily my husband's pretty good at that.

Same here, I prefer to park far away rather than fight for a space or stress over it. I'm also not at all competitive on the road as I see others are sometimes. That's just dangerous, to worry whether someone cuts in front of them and so forth. I figure if someone cuts me off, they're in more of a hurry than I am. I'd rather get there alive. I back off and let them go.

I do my best to be my calmest and most relaxed while driving, while still aware of everything that's going on. I've had very few mishaps as a result. It is a form of multi-tasking, but it's one that I don't have a problem with as long as I stay calm and alert.

I'd rather just walk. I need my exercise.

I added it up one day and I have owned over twenty different makes of cars.
That's makes, mind you, not models from the same manufacturer.
Couldn't live without getting behind the wheel.
When I'm old and feeble, I'll pay someone to drive me to some remote spot where I can slip behind the wheel and drive without injuring any poor soul.

Where I live and work I do not need a car. But I am planning on restoring my car and motorcycle
licenses in the near future. I plan on owning either a small motorcycle or a scooter to extend my range
here in York County PA and using the car license to hire a Zip or Flex Car for carrying bulky items.

It depends on where you live. I grew up in a city with great public transit so I never bothered to get my lincense. Driving sort of scares me a little and it seemed so pointless since finding parking in the city I live in often takes longer than taking public transportation. However, I moved to LA for two years for school and I found I was stuck on school campus because I didn't have a card. I could either get a lincese or move back to my hometown. I opted to move back to my hometown. I still don't have a lincese.
