I keep getting topic reply notifications i didn't ask for...
The option is badly worded. Although it tersely states:
what it actually means is:
This is actually the same as the "Always attach my signature", "Always allow BBCode" and "Always enable Smilies" options. They all just specify the defaults for the tick boxes.
So... by having set "Always notify me of replies" to "No", it means you will (by default) NOT be put on the watch list for threads you post on, in future.
Threads you are already on the watch list for will continue t send you reminders, until you actively take yourself off their lists.
In order to come off those watch lists, you need to hit the "Stop watching this topic" link, at the bottom of page one (*) of the thread.
(*) Page one, because a bug means that if you're not on page one, all the link does is to take you to page one.

That isn't the problem... I'm getting topic reply notifications to threads I didn't even respond to... I seem to be getting these automated messages for every thread I read, whether I reply to them or not... I have made sure, that when I reply to a post, the little checkbox is unchecked, and I still get the notifications... fully 50% of my email for the past week has consisted of these notifications...
I didn't ask for them, I don't want them, and your response is that I did ask for them, as if I can't read simple instructions.
Quite frankly, I'm offended.
Unchecking the checkbox will not take you off a list you are already on the watch list of. Only the method I described earlier will do that.
If you never wish to add any threads to your watched lists, why do you not reset the single checkbox in your profile, rather than unset each checkbox when you reply?
You also said " i have to cancel each one as it comes in...", which means nothing to me. I have no idea what "cancel" means to you, in connection with an email message.
Quite frankly, I'm offended.
Are you following my instructions for removing yourself from the watched list of each thread that you have received notifications from?
==============
As you seem to be the sole member who receives notifications that they have not requested, I can only attempt to guess at any other explanation.
- Someone else has somehow managed to set your email address as their email address. I think this is unlikely. You could ask Alex to check this for you.
- Someone is forging the notifications, as some sort of malware attack. This could be the case, if anyone has come up with an automated method of capturing genuine emails, then patching them with their own links. I'd say this was unlikely, but possible. Maybe you should check the email headers, to see if this could be the case.
- You are overlooking something.
Maybe if you collected information on the notifications you are receiving, we could figure out what is going on. I.e. I suggest that you collect the post numbers from the lines:
http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... opic&p=X#X
(the two numbers are always the same).
Note that most members find that they have ceased receiving notifications - rather than are receiving extra ones. This seems to be the case when the user (myself included) gets an email notification, and does not actually follow the link to the new post (i.e. forgets to do so). If you do not (and never again) view the thread, you will not receive any further emails. If you view it at all, then the system will reset itself, again ready to send you an email for any further traffic to that thread.
==========
There is only one way to remove yourself from a watched list,. which I detailed to you in my first post.
==========
PS. I assumed that your OP was referring to the checkbox in your profile. I specifically gave the wording for that checkbox in my reply. I very rarely even look at the checkboxes below each reply I make, as I have the defaults (from my profile) set the way I want them.

My OP DID state that I'm getting topic reply notifications I neither asked for nor desire. If you needed more info than that, you might have asked for the info you needed instead of jumping to conclusions.
As it is, your assumptions are incorrect, and I'm still getting a mailbox full of topic reply notifications that I don't want.
Clicking the link in the email (the one that say's "click this link to stop watching this topic") does not stop the emails. Clicking the link in the individual threads that say's "stop watching this topic" does not stop the emails.
So far I've got about 100 emails of topic replies I didn't ask for. I forwarded the most recent six of them back to Alex's email, with the following message attached:
Ive been getting topic reply notifications that I didn't ask for. Every thread I look at or reply to seems to generate these notices. I did not request these notices, and I've tried to cancel them, but they keep coming. I attempted to resolve this on the WP message board, but the Admin (lau) seems to be under the impression that I inadvertantly requested them. I can assure you I did not, and made sure that for each topic I responded to , the checkbox to watch the topic was not selected. I have used the link in this email to cancel the notices, and I have clicked "stop watching this topic" on each of the threads as well, but the notices keep coming.
Please make them stop.
Thanks,
JR
If that doesn''t work, I'll forward all 100 of them to him, and keep forwarding him the new ones as they come in. Hopefully he'll do something about this, since you seem to be unwilling to even acknowledge that there is a problem or attempt to do anything about it besides treating me like a child.
Thank you for your kind attention to this matter.
For either method, unless you see the page that states:
You are no longer watching this topic
Click Here to return to the topic

actually, your clicking the link in the email is the only reason the updates are continuing. you wont get subsequent updates if you don't click on the thread.
Well, I tried it, and it didn't work...
A few examples:
At , 12:13 AM Monday I got a reply notification for this thread: http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... 80#2572980
I never posted in this thread nor did I click the link to watch the topic. I did look at the thread once, but that was it. At 12:50 PM and then again at 10:35 PM last night, I got topic reply notifications for the same thread, even though I did not visit that thread in the intervening hours.
At 10:47 PM Monday, I got a topic reply notice for this thread: http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... 36#2574036
I never posted in this thread, nor did I click the link to watch the topic. Again, I looked at this thread once, nothing more. I got another notification for this thread at 4:06AM Tuesday, and again I did not visit the thread after that first visit.
I have many more examples of this happening, and I'll be glad to forward the topic reply notifications to your email if you need to see them for yourself.
If your explanation above was true, I should have gotten only one reply notification for each of these threads, and then no more notifications unless i revisited the thread (even though I never requested ANY topic reply notifications). Your explanation does not seem to apply to my situation.
In my profile, I have "Always notify me of replies" set to "No". I have never checked the box to be notified of replies when replying to a topic, and I have never clicked the link marked "Watch this topic for replies".
Has anyone looked into why I'm getting these notifications?
I really don't want these notifications and am quite offended by the presumptive and dismissive attitude of the admin.
Just so we understand each other, let me repeat:
I DID NOT request these notifications, I don't want them, and I want them to stop.
I don't know how I can be any clearer than that, but I'm open to suggestions.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
This is just plain wrong. A solid month I've been getting these unwanted emails, and you won't even acknowledge there is a problem. I can't even get a response despite waiting patiently all this time.
If anyone out there has any suggestions about how to make these emails stop I'd be glad to hear them.
Here is Lau's PM response I just got:
At , 12:13 AM Monday I got a reply notification for this thread: http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... 80#2572980

I never posted in this thread, nor did I click the link to watch the topic. Again, I looked at this thread once
which is EXACTLY what we have been telling you re-activates the reminders
I have many more examples of this happening, and I'll be glad to forward the topic reply notifications to your email if you need to see them for yourself.
The WP database maintains a list of thread/user pairs. Each has a flag to say whether the user has been notified of a new post. Whenever a thread gets a reply, and the flag is clear, the user is sent an email and the flag is set, to say an email has been sent. When the user visits that thread, the flag is cleared. That is the entire mechanism.
When you take the "Stop watching this topic" on the FIRST page of the thread, WP will delete the thread/user record, and tell you that you are no longer watching the thread. You have never stated that you have seen this message.
This is getting extremely frustrating. Is there anything unclear in what I've written? I've tried to be as crystal clear as I can possibly be, to the point of being anal, and still he does not understand what I am saying.
How can I explain this problem in words he can understand?
Basically, I'm being told "You MUST visit the thread and click a link to stop watching a topic" AND "You MUST NOT visit the thread or you will keep getting the emails"
I've tried both ways. Neither works.
And, for the record, I have seen the message that states "You are no longer watching this topic". The emails keep coming, even after the system displays that message. "Of course they do". they tell me, "because you visited the topic".
The system is not working. Think about it.
If I visit a page, and do not click the "Watch topic for replies" link, and do not post a response to the topic, I shouldn't get any email at all. If I get an email in that situation, then it is obvious that part of the system is broken somehow.
At the very least, you can acknowledge that much, Lau.
You are currently watching 176 topics. About a hundred of them are waiting for you to visit the thread, before they will send you a new reminder.
The list includes at least two of the threads from the forty notification emails you forwarded to me (unsolicited). I'll assume that the rest of those emails match up with items on your list of watched threads.
The two I looked at were:
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postx116224-0-0.html
http://www.wrongplanet.net/postx100526-0-0.html
These are still showing as watched by you. If you go to their first page, as per the links above, and click on the "Stop watching this topic", I'll look to see if they have left your list.
If that fails, then I have no idea why you cannot stop watching them yourself. They are all watched under your username (user_id=12918), as I said before. I can imagine no reason why you should receive a message to say the thread is no longer watched, but then find you are still watching it.
You could ask Alex to delete all the watched thread records for you. I'm not happy to do this sort of thing - for various reasons.
If there exists some bug in the software which is singling out your user_id, and creating watch records for random threads, I'm sure Alex would like to cure that.

You're the admin. It's your job.
If you don't want to do the job, step down and give it to someone who won't shirk their duty just because it makes them unhappy.
You are probably confused as to what the Admin does here on WrongPlanet.net, jrknothead. If you have any problems with the software please contact Alex at the "Contact Us" at the top of every page, or the " Enter your name and number below to call Alex Plank, Wrong Planet developer:" Call Me at the bottom of every page.
The mods try to help in every way they can, and we have been turning ourselves inside out trying to help you with your issue, but no one has a 'duty' to do something for someone just because they demand it. There are no expectations of moderators other than
and there is no mention of Admins at all.
