A Russian language question, please help

How would you say something like "It is cold" in Russian? My best guess is "Это холод", but I'm not sure. I know that adjectives change their ending according to the noun they describe, but there isn't really a noun in this phrase. Would you use "это" as the noun, in which case the adjective would be "холодное" because it ends in an o? Is это even correct in this context? :?
