Quote:
GREECE, N.Y. - Jason McElwain had done everything he was asked to do for the Greece Athena High School basketball team — keep the stats, run the clock, hand out water bottles.

That all changed last week for the team manager in the final home game of the season. The 17-year-old senior, who is autistic and usually sits on the bench in a white shirt and black tie, put on a uniform and entered the game with his team way ahead.

McElwain proceeded to hit six 3-point shots, finished with 20 points and was carried off the court on his teammates’ shoulders.

It's nice that this story is getting so much attention all of a sudden. It's truly inspiring.

I'm participating in a discussion on another forum, for people who used to go to a college I used to go to; and it's interesting how they're suddenly interested in autism. I even managed to educate a few of them about what Asperger's is. Of course, I did get a "stop it with the science lecture" from a couple of them; but they should know by now that science lectures are a fact of life if you hang out with me!

Did anyone hear his interview? It was on our local news here and he sounded amazed at himself :) I actually thought he was AS because he spoke so well :)

Did anyone see the little clip on the CBS early show this morning? I agree with you QuietAngel, he did speak very well. I noticed he's left handed when signing autographs. He had very large, loopy handwriting. Still, it's great to see the support of his school and team mates. The rest of the students thought he was great. The story was a real positive story and how he's been supported and lifted up by everyone. What I want to know was how his standing in the school was before the 20-point event. Social life for Auties and Aspies is ususally pretty rough.

It's great to see this great accomplishment by an autistic person, and the subsequent acceptance and support it brings. I wish though that we didn't need to make major accomplishments that are above and beyond NT's to achieve acceptance in the world. When I was in school, I always felt like my every move was being examined so I could be scrutinized and ridiculed for it. While having a remarkable accomplishment like this would have been nice. I just wanted to be an "average" person and blend in with everyone else.
