Those were good times in some ways.

No Internet, though. Just encyclopedias.

My dad bought a set for me in 1969. The Columbia.

I did my entire University education without internet. That's hard core research.

Hate to keep correcting you about your own life, but.. no...you are NOT "from before ToysRus".
You, and your childhood, were contemporary with ToysRus.

ToysRUs (under a different name) was founded in 1948, and changed its name to ToysRus in 1957. But it was founded here in Washington DC. So it IS possible that the chain did not muscle into your NYC area until years later.

So It COULD be possible that you, being in NYC, missed out on being "A ToysRus kid".

But it was very much part of my DC area childhood, and were about the same age.

During the Sixties I would see the commercials with the talking giraffes ( big G and Little G) on the cartoon shows I watched, and there was a big store near our neighborhood that remained as a huge landmark long after we moved to other parts of town, and long after I outgrew the store (its near the U of Md where I went to college). Pretty sure that it wasnt until the 2000s that that particular TRU got sold and got repurposed into the charity thrift shop it is now.

Children's Bargaintown became Toys-R-Us about 1972 or so. Or maybe Toys-R-Us bought them.

The giraffe used to be the mascot for Children's Bargaintown. Their slogan was "Toys-R-Us."

At least that's my impression....

"Scream" by Dio

Quote:
You've made it through another day
Driving past the back roads of your mind
You could have turned the other way
And break down on the sanity you've found inside you

Someone said you are fantasy
But in the darkness
Behind your smile
You scream
Scream
Scream for the crazy ones
Scream at the things you've done
Scream at the rising sun

We bless the beautiful
Let us forgive you for your sins
These must be holy ones
How could we believe they'd let us in

Oh once I heard that they were fantasy
But in the darkness
Behind their smiles
They scream
Scream
Scream of a broken heart
Scream as they come apart
Scream cause they never started

No pain
No sympathy
You've always been so steady at the wheel
Some friend reality
You break down on the highway
About to see it my way

Scream at the crazy ones
Scream cause they all have sons
Scream as they point the gun at you
Scream at the bleeding heart
Scream cause the end won't start
Scream as you come apart again
Again, again, again
