I found this clip that was shown to me ages ago which I find pretty interesting....
I'd thought i'd best show it to everyone to get their points of view on it and what they think?

I saw this on youtube the other day, I made me feel choked up which isn't good because I was in my art lesson and I didn't want to show myself up.
I related to the third man, the one that said he used to let people take advantage of him, that was all of school for me.

Do you know actually that guy funny enough, he is a member on WP... I can't seem to remember his name though? But his face is very very familiar. :?

I felt sad watching this.

The first boy in the clip who appeared in two versions of the same scene actually looks quite a lot like I did as a teenager!

I was tall enough and just sharp enough not to be physically bullied at school, but I could TOTALLY relate to the other boy who was very upset recounting his incident. The verbal abuse and the names were relentless.

I was reminded of how thoroughly miserable my teen years (especially) were.

The adult who was interview was Chris Goodchild, author of 'A painful gift', who is a fellow member of WP.

Thank you for posting this, as hard as it was to watch, it was also very helpful to be able to have a tool like this to help NT's around me relate to what my childhood was like. I swear I could see myself in that clip and all the other clips from NAS that were on there.

I feel that I'm lucky. I did have issues but people in school were scared of me (due to intentional actions on my part) so bullying was not so bad as that for me. But the bullying that happened to me was rumours and people believing the rumors and acting accordingly.

YES!! Thats the name I was looking for... I was trying to figure out who he was... he looked very familiar and i'm very good at recognising peoples faces...

I can easily misunderstand the body language and misinterpret what some people can say... but I was lucky I was in special ed, becuase if I was in a mainstream environment... I would most likely go through this patch. :(

Hello Ian,

You are one of the younger members of WP and I'd like to say, as one of the older ones, that I find your postings and your positive attitude very uplifting.

You clearly are running with the ball (American football term) in your life.

Keep up the good work and keep your eyes on the prize. :thumright:

That brought back memories for me. It happened in elementary school, high school and at my first job. I think that's a very good video and this video should be the one to educate people about autism, instead of that stupid Autism Everyday one.

Brings up a lot of wounds and bad memories. School was always a living nightmare when subjected to my "peers". Caused a lot of damage that still affects me to this day. It's sad to know that so many suffer that way.

Does anyone know if his book is available in the US? I just checked Amazon and it's not listed, although it is available on the UK version of the site.

I can't say my teen years were as bad as those in the clip, although I did seem to attract more than my share of unkindnesses. Probably because I was a girl, most of the bullying I received was of the verbal taunting variety and even that wasn't too bad. Throwing a metal folding chair at one of the perpetrators probably made me a less tempting target.

No, I'm not advocating it, that's just what happened and he did leave me alone afterwards. It's the only time I've ever lost control like that in public. I didn't actually hit him with it and no one got into trouble over it, even though the band director saw the whole thing. I think he thought the guy deserved it. It was a different time, though, and these days the outcome would almost definitely be less positive. Don't try this at home (or school), kids.

I lost it at school when I was about 13 or 14.

One of the 'cool gang' and one of my chief antagonists opened his mouth once too often.

I don't remember much because all I could see was red - I really do mean that I couldn't see anything.

When my vision returned he was on the floor and he was bleeding and I remember feeling confused :!:

In a moment that (in the context of the 70s, when it happened) was triumphant, the Head Master explained the next day at a school assembly (to paraphrase) that a good kid had been provoked into doing something unfortunate and out of character by someone not so nice.

The antagonism stopped and I remained friendless.

In college I had the opportunity to silence a group of antagonists of a fellow undergraduate.

My shoulders had broadened and my arms had swelled to the point where I only needed to speak out to terminate the cruelty.

The third person that was interviewed pretty much nailed how I managed school. The only difference being that I sought out submissive personalities to surround myself with and avoid the dominant personalities as best as I could, sometimes using the submissives as a shield.

As for the initial part of the video, I thought both were so over the top that I couldn't help but laugh.

I know what you mean. I don't even remember what the guy said. One minute I was sitting in the chair, the next he was dodging it. I knew I'd thrown it, but I didn't remember doing it. I just sat and cried quietly for a while and everyone else started band practice and left me alone to calm down.

It's great that your Head Master was so understanding and that you were able to take on the bullies for someone else.
