I'll admit, I don't observe lent because I'm especially religious. I observe it because it appeals to the stoic in me AND it's a hella-good reason to drink doppelbock! :D

It only comes once a year. (I gave up WoW, btw.)

I gave up fast/junk/vending machine food, red meat and chocolate except just before exams (a snickers just before a test is the key to an A)...

I feel so weak... need... strong... dark.... beer.... to sustain me...

Mindfulness

A more adult version of cutting out cookies before Christmas [pun not intended, though Advent has counted in times and spaces as a lent]

Besides it being a "holy" day, I don't know a goddamn thing about it.

Watching other people struggle with what they gave up

I agree with the post directly above mine. One of the best things is watching people going nuckin' futs over what they gave up.
Don't get me wrong, I respect the people that have the fortitude to follow the practice if it is part of their religion, it is just fun watching them is all.

Yeah I'm very mean sometimes lol.

I'm my church's Lich.

A play on word because in a graveyard before you get to an individual church's burial section there is a fancy gate called a Lich gate

I'm Catholic, so I observe Lent. :) I gave up doing research on Christian Weston Chandler; specifically browsing the wiki that documents every facet of his life, the CWCki. It's something I should have done a long time ago, because it's probably the most stupid interest I've ever had. And yet, it's amazing how addicting it is to observe someone spiral further and further into madness. Nonetheless, I'm happy that I gave it up because it frees up my time to do other things, like watch movies and, of course, browse other wikis.

Oh yeah, I also fast and refrain from eating red meat on Fridays. Starving all day and not getting to eat a juicy cheeseburger or General Tso's Chicken at night really sucks, but it's taught me two things: 1) self-caught fish tastes much better than farm-raised fish; 2) homemade breaded shrimp is incredibly tasty.

That's right and without 'Lent' there would be no 'Fat Tuesday'.

Midnight on Fat Tuesday was the ONLY time of the year I recall being UNABLE to 'get a drink' in the French Quarter. :D

Bon temps roulez :!:

I am giving up red meat, dairy, eggs, and junk food.

I started an experiment on February 17th, if you are Catholic,
you may understand why. If you are not Christian, I strongly insist
you do not make fun of me.

Instead of vending machine food, I purchase a granola bar.
You can't go wrong with those.
