What is the best way of registering my site with google?

I have finished my web site . It has taken weeks of not knowing anything about websites and learning . It is very nice.
I went to register it with google and google won't verify it.
The software is Sandvox Pro.
There is an inspector that tells you to put HTML in a box from google. I put google HTML in inspector box and publish bit it still won't verify. There is nowhere to put anything from Sandvox into google. This is an ambiguous instruction because it doesn't tell you what is meant to be put where.
I feel very stupid, and it is actually upsetting that I can not perform what is obviously a simple action for most people but I can't grasp the rules .
Also what is registration
What is metatag
what is sitemap etc.
They do not realize that an older generation do not actually know what these things are.
Please help. I have returning teenager in strop in bath and late for first day on course, and mother -in-law arriving NT wife insists bathroom ceiling needs painting prior to MIL arrival, and I am using most of my own processing power to deal with this stress. It is like Mexican standoff at bathroom door. Teenager loudly splashing as I type and I am building myself up for having to take teenager through rush hour if ever gets out of bath. Has been know to stay semi submerged for up to four hours.

There are two different tracks for registering a site with Google (at least, if I have understood your post correctly). The simple track is to go to http://www.google.com/addurl/ and enter the homepage URL of your site, e.g. http://wwww.mysite.net/, and fill in the human-detector box with the short text in the picture. There is an optional comment.
The complex track is to register as a webmaster at http://www.google.com/webmasters/ so that you can use their tools http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ to improve your site and its ranking. Or you could register as an enterprise at http://www.google.com/analytics/ to use Google Analytics, which I think helps if you have Google adverts. Either track is about getting your site to appear high in a Google search result.
(Like I said, I might have completed misinterpreted your post).
The meta tags are text elements that are not displayed to the reader, but help the indexer or the browser with formatting and content. For instance, <meta name="Description" content="My new gardening website"> would help Google index the site's purpose while <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"> tells the browser to display the characters using Latin alphabet No. 1 (Western European). Meta tags go in the <head>...</head> section of an html file. If you want to rank highly in searches, then you should also run some HTML validation at something like http://validator.w3.org/check and link-checking at something like http://validator.w3.org/checklink and make sure that you have your key search words in the page <title>, meta description, possibly meta keywords, in the first <h> heading, in the first <p> paragraph and throughout the text body.
The really difficult part to improving your rank (there is a whole Search Engine Optimisation - SEO - industry) is encouraging the creation of links to your site that also contain the same words adjacent to the link.

In Sandvox there are all these boxes next to the page . They say put meta tags here. Shall I put them in , like " prints "
Can I cause havoc if they are wrong?
I do not know what Sandvox is, so I do not know what "like prints" means. But in general, if you do not use a correct character encoding, then most browsers will default to something sensible like utf8 and display the page exactly as you intended (unless you meant to use displayed accents, Greek, Hewbrew etc). If you do not use a correct html version string then again the browser will probably do something sensible - e.g. if you use html version 3 codes but declare html version 4, then most things will work as expected. For instance, all tags must be in lower case in html 4, but I don't think any browsers care.
However, web search engines might not be so fault tolerant. For instance, they could require an image tag to be closed, and ignore any text apparently inside the image tag - old html was happy with <img> but new html requires <img></img>, abbreviated to <img />.
If you use a valid document type from http://www.w3.org/QA/2002/04/valid-dtd-list.html and validate the pages, then you will soon find any problems.

Stuart thanks again. I think you might be overestimating the level of ability and awareness I have in this field. Sandvox is a very simple package designed for arty folk who don't know much about anything else. It is a sort of interpretation from HTML to simple visual. I have learned to change some basic stuff through site injection code like page color etc. FFFFFF
I am an artist and I was wondering if meta tags referred to tagging various aspects of my art work. Ie do I tag for example "prints" of work I want to sell on the prints for sale page.
There is a simple box to put tags into and I think the software might do the rest if the above is the case.
What I want to end up with is a site people can find on google , and when it comes up in the search engine it would be nice to have the structure of the pages there they can click to like " home " about me contact etc. ( is this a "site map")
HTML is fascinating but my primary concern is how to sell my NT wife's work and my own work
and the simplest route to that is required.
Have to go with NT wife to big NT bedding sales building to buy sheets for her bed. Am psyching up for experience. Might stay in car . Not sure yet.

I would assume the software works and keep a watch on Google until the page appears and then modify it if you can see any improvements. It can take a few weeks for Google to get around to indexing a site - the more links you have to it from elsewhere, the better.
