I hate it when when people learn about me like anime, comptuer modding, 1337 speak saying its because its the in thing, I did them way before I knew others did them, I also hate it when I hear that when I annonce what bands i like. "oh you only like it because everyone elkse does, not because its good." I dont care what others like or do with their lives. somethings I was on since before the trend, others I stumbled on and had no idea, or care it had a following

I just got called a weeaboo for thinking Devil May Cry 2 isn't good, because that's what people on forums think. I'm still trying to figure out how that makes sense.

I feel your pain. Kinda.

Heh, back in the day I used to get the very same way over things, with anime even.

You can always look at it as an opportunity, you've got a genuine interest and other people have that same interest in common with you.

When we see something about our own self in other people, it creates a connection -- socially that's just how people are wired to be. Otherwise, I can't talk to people since what would I know to talk about?? Might as well embrace it as a common interest.

I understand how you feel. I've been hating vampires for as long as I can remember, but I can't say I hate them, because people will think I'm doing it just to join the Twilight hating bandwagon. It doesn't matter to me whether vampires dissolve, blow up, or sparkle in the sunlight, I'm still going to think they are overrated, overused, cliched, and boring.

I liked the ones in the old movies when they were actually scary. Now I think vampires are plain stupid.

Leet speak is some 10 years old and even back then I never really liked it. I've not heard (or read) anyone use it in ages, though I don't frequent chatrooms like I used to.
Fortunately I'm usually repulsed by most mainstream music so I don't often get people saying I just like something because it's popular.
I think with me people can tell because though something may be popular I am 10 billion times more obsessed with it than they are. I liked anime some 10 years ago too during the Neon Genesis Evangelion era and a few years back got into Bleach, Eureka Seven and other anime shows that I watched at the time. I also got a lot of sh** thrown at me for liking the Bleach game which was apparently the worst Nintendo Wii game of the year.
Although I did get people (mainly the sister) talking about the certain people that listened to bands that I was friends with, i.e jocks only listen to these bands. Right, skinny boys in tight pants, that were not fashionable enough to be called emo. Jocks listen to these guys. The man-boys that I would have drinks with after gigs that show not one sign of evidence that they could kick a ball let alone be a jock? I beg to differ.

Eh, I say f*** em. Who cares what people think about you? I don't get told I'm trying to be like everyone else but I get made fun of for my more childish and nerdy hobbies.

Yes I hate it. BUT - wait a while and they will change again and you can keep on keeping on.

Very few people know some of my favorite bands, and few people understand the things I'm into. So, I don't really have that issue.

it sucks when you are into something for years then suddenly it becomes trendy and then people think you are only following the trend.
then trends change and they suddenly think you are "uncool"

really annoying.
