how the hell do i upload an image?

i've read the instructions: no larger than 130*160 pixels and no larger than 16KB: files this small are just unheard of in this day and age anyway. there is no way in hell i can save a Jpeg any smaller than 96KB: this just seems to be the lowest elementary state. don't ask me why; it just ain't gonna get any smaller!

please help

What picture are you trying to upload?

Try saving it as a .gif and taking down the contrast a bit.
I'm pretty certain he/she wants to upload an avatar.

Well, yeah, I was just figuring it would be easier for him to link to the picture and have someone else resize it.

The only images one 'uploads' here are avatars, which are the small graphics under the member's name next to their posts. Otherwise, you must have the image hosted elsewhere and link to it using the options under the message subject field.

I think to upload an avatar, go to profile or edit profile
I think you "just" have to find the file using the uploader.
But first,
To make it small, if you use Windows,
Paint should have a "image attributes" or "image resize"
kind of thing but be careful because
attributes will just give you a smaller piece of the picture
and the other option will change the size.
PAINT should be in Start Program Accessories I think.
If Paint works, save not a BMP but a GIF, PNG, or JPG.

About finding the file in Windows, either put it on your
desktop or "my pictures" folder and figure out where it
is with "search for files" or "find files" in the start menu.
and then find it again on the profile WP avatar upload applet
in that same place.

Its been a very long time since I used Windows and
so I could be totally wrong in VISTA or SEVEN
which I never used. I hope this might still be useful to try.

@OP: Some graphics programs put a lot of unnecessary bloat into picture files, taking up space while adding nothing to image quality. Lau has posted extensively on this subject in the past and may be able to point you in the right direction.

A technique that has just occurred to me, for users stuck with a Microsoft OS, would be to get the picture you want visible on your screen, then do a "Print Screen" to grab purely the image, with no extraneous junk.

You can then use MS Paint to crop/scale/edit that image to what you want, and save it as a PNG. Definitely do not leave it as the BMP that the screen capture gives you.
