Don't you hate when that godd*** word is thrown around when the correct word is actually "selfishness"? Well those type of people are usually ignorant when it comes to the bigger picture of the way they look at things, but prejudice and discrimination is more of a result of being an a**hole rather than being a poor innocent unknowing soul.

There are cases where people are actually ignorant and make bad judgment from jumping to conclusions, but you shouldn't mistake that for people who know about another group, but see them as inferior since that's the way they value people.

I think that selfishness is a better word, myself. Selfish people go around, saying that we're ret*ds. Selfish parents don't do their own research on ASDs, because they don't care about their spectrum child, and they want them to be "normal". Selfish peers push us around, during our high school years, because they don't want to be bothered with us, and they think that the world would be better off, without us. Not to mention the selfish teachers that we are given, from grades 1 to 12, and beyond. Selfish people also don't want a relationship with a disabled peer, of the opposite sex, either. It's all selfishness. Selfish people also support CAN, DAN and Autism Speaks.

I have to nitpick with this particular one. I think many of those parents really do fit the term "ignorant" rather than "selfish". They absolutely do care about their autistic child (hard to believe from your perspective, but it really is frequently true) and seek to "normalize" them because they are sure their children will have horrible lives if they don't do this. This is literally ignorance about what the quality of life of somebody autistic can be. It isn't selfish to want your child to have the best life you can provide. It is ignorance of the possibility that an autistic adulthood can be a "best" adulthood for that particular person. From their perspective, it would be selfish not to do these intrusive therapies since they are convinced that these therapies are the ticket to their child's adult well-being. That's ignorance, not selfishness.

Correct.

I like the word "bankrupt" It's kind of all encompassing.

*Applauds to CockneyRebel's speech.* :hail:

I wish I could fully agree with Janissy, but I think it is partly selfishness, partly ignorance. I know ignorance has the the root word for "ignore" in it, but I think sometimes people choose to ignore information that is intended to help their child. I don't know many parents, but I know someone's mom who refuses to do her own research. It happens, and it's too bad. Oh, well.

As for those who are ignorant and make bad judgment from jumping to conclusions, they do need to learn not to assume and jump to conclusions without evidence/research. That's just my opinion, and I know there's nothing we can do about it.

When I was at school, some of the moodier girls would call you 'ignorant' if you said absolutely anything that annoyed them even in the slightest.

The word was used as a catch-all term of contempt.

This seems to be it in a lot of cases, and not just for ASD individuals. Plenty of young parents out there are still children, so they are very selfish. In turn, they become ignorant of their own children and expect society to parent for them.

Applause for those parents who take the responsibility of parenthood seriously.

Yeah this is the part where it gets complicated and is pretty much opening a can of worms. Some parents truly believe that it would help their kids to become more social since human beings naturally have a desire to belong. Others are narcissistic bastards who have contempt for people who struggle socially and want their kids to act normal to meet their expectations with no regard for the kid's needs.

This is an interesting thought, and a good one. I think you're right.
