I'm not a furry, I don't consider myself one and I don't feel obliged to obsess over anthros, but I kind of like anthros. I think it stems from me being raised around dogs. I have 5 right now and over the years, I think I've had 12 to 13 total. Some we didn't keep because of certain reasons(I gave my dog to a friend because her dog died. My dog was her dog's sister and had mental problems, and although I was reluctant, I gave it to her so she wouldn't be depressed.), some died of old age. I've even fostered a few. And I might work at the humane society over the summer. I like wolves too. My mom used to be a vet, and I wanted to for a long time, until I figured that I couldn't bear putting an animal down. Me and my mom love animals so much, that my mom will stop and risk a car wreck to save something crossing the road. I do so too.
Although I've always liked anthros, I was disgusted when I first heard about furries. I thought they were all a bunch of bestiality freaks or something. But, I did research and started to notice for the most part they're just a bunch of nerds similar to people in the Star Wars fandom(which I'm part of) or trekkies.
I always found anthropomorphic animals more interesting in cartoons when I was little, and in books and stuff, usually my favorite character is either an alien that resembles an anthro(In sci-fi) or an anthro proper(fantasy books). I like to look at anthro art if kept clean. I'm starting to draw anthro art as well. But like I said, I'm not too obsessed with them and I have no interest in joining the fandom. I'd have to be as obsessed with anthros as I am with Star Wars for me to define myself as a furry(considering I very of nostalgia while watching Star Wars movies, I'd have to be really obsessed)
And, it would be really stressful for me because despite yiffers and furverts being in the minority, they tend to be very loud and open about their interests, thus why the vast majority of the internet and the media percieves the fandom to be sick and messed up. I find yiff to be absolutely disgusting, but I don't judge others. I just wish yiffers weren't so open. I never plan on going on FA and/or other furry websites, because I'm sure I'll constantly be exposed to things that'll make me grab desperately for the eye bleach. Its perfectly fine for someone to have a fetish, but when someone has to tell the whole world... yeah, that's wrong.
Oh, and I find making animal noises to be a bit odd and I find fursuiting to be stupid because it makes people look like mascots rather than anthros. It's similar to how I like anime and manga yet despise cosplayers because they look ridiculous with fake-looking colorful wigs and makeup. It's my understanding that the definition of a furry changes from person to person. For me I don't think I am, but if anyone wants to call me that, I'm cool with it.
I'm okay with Therians and otherkin because I play an mmo chock full of them, but as I'm a very logical person I'd never want to be one. Although they don't have nearly as many yiff-type people in their ranks(or at least they don't seem to be as open), the downside of the otherkin/therians is that they are a bit deranged by my standards. I've told a person playing a dragon character in the mmo I play that I hate dragons. I actually really like dragons, but I was roleplaying a humanoid character and dragons tend to think of humanoids as inferior in that game. The dragon threatened to report me after giving up chasing me around town with two hatchlings. I also mentioned a game on psp called monster hunter in which you kill dragons at some ingame dragon gathering that I attended and got trampled by about ten of them.
