Here is an apt quote for my reasoning as to the veracity of the statement made in the topic title:

Enlightenment age of France
China in general is always interesting (the Mao era in particular is great)
Japan is interesting, but not all the time. (After a while, being isolated makes you boring :X)

My mother was crazy about Elizabethan England, used to own hundreds of books on it.

I'd like to know more about Russia, but haven't found the time to do much research.

When you do, I would suggest researching Tsar Peter the Great. IMO he seemed to have been a pretty cool guy.
